SEOUL, June 15 (Yonhap) -- The global revenue for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels is set to expand 15.5 percent in 2018 from a year earlier, the data compiled by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) showed Friday.

According to the DSCC report, the combined revenue of the global OLED panel market is estimated to reach around US$26.9 billion this year, compared with $23.3 billion posted a year earlier.

The U.S. industry tracker said while the revenue fell 33 percent on-quarter in the January-March period of 2018 to reach $5.8 billion, the market is expected to post on-quarter growth over the third and fourth quarters of the year.

In the first quarter, smartphone panels accounted for 88 percent of the revenues, followed by OLED TVs and smartwatch panels with 7 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively, the DSCC data showed.

Samsung Display Co. accounted for 89 percent of the revenue over the cited period, followed by LG Display Co. with 9.5 percent, the DSCC added.

"In smartphones, Samsung surpassed Apple in the first quarter of 2018 to take the No. 1 spot for OLED revenues due to a cut in orders by Apple. These two top brands consumed 79 percent of OLED panels by revenue in the first quarter of 2018," the DSCC report said.

"Smartphones will remain the dominant area for OLED panels throughout the forecast period. We forecast that smartphones will account for 91 percent of unit shipments and 79 percent of revenue in 2022."
