ULLEUNG ISLAND, South Korea, July 17 (Yonhap) -- A Russian naval cruiser that was scuttled in the early 20th century has been discovered under seas off South Korea's eastern Ulleung Island, its South Korean finder said Tuesday.

"We found the body of the Dmitrii Donskoi 434 meters deep in seas 1.3 kilometers off Ulleung Island at around 9:50 a.m., Sunday," Shinil Group said.

The ship belonging to Russia's Imperial Baltic Fleet was sunk near the island during a battle with the Japanese navy in 1905, when the two countries were at war.

"The name of Dmitrii Donskoi was discovered on the stern of the ship," said the company, which has endeavored to find the ship for years.

On Saturday, a Shinil expedition team mobilized two manned submersibles as it found a ship believed to be Donskoi under the sea. The team confirmed later that the body and cannons of the ships captured via a high-definition video camera are perfectly consistent with drawings of the ship.

The group found the ship's name on its stern on Sunday and 203-mm and 152-mm cannons, machine guns, an anchor, two chimneys, three masts, a wooden deck and armored sides on the following day.

At the time of discovery, the bow of the ship was 430 meters deep, with its stern heading toward the surface 380 meters deep.

"The body of the ship was severely damaged by shelling, with its stern almost broken, and yet the ship's deck and sides are well preserved," the company said.

"Our discovery has finally put a stop to a controversy over Donskoi's existence and sunken location. We'll soon go ahead with procedures to rescue the ship," the company said.
