SEOUL, July 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean football club Ulsan Hyundai said Wednesday they've signed Manchester City midfielder Mix Diskerud on loan.

The K League 1 club said they've inked a one-year loan deal with Diskerud. This is the first time a South Korean club signed a player directly from the English Premier League giants.

Diskerud, born to an American mother and Norwegian father, made his pro debut in 2008 with the Oslo-based club Stabaek. He then had stints in Belgium, Norway and Sweden. He was with New York City in Major League Soccer before moving to City.

Diskerud signed a 4 1/2-year deal with City in January 2018 but was loaned out to Swedish side IFK Goteborg.

The 27-year-old plays for the U.S. national team and bagged six goals in 38 matches. He also represented the U.S. at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Diskerud faced South Koreans at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup and a friendly match in January 2014.

Ulsan said Diskerud will boost their midfield with his passing and vision, while helping existing players like Park Joo-ho and Lee Keun-ho.

"I heard that the K League is the best football league in Asia," Diskerud said through Ulsan. "I have big expectations playing with Ulsan."
