SEOUL, July 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's aquaculture output marked an on-year fall in the first half of the year but showed satisfactory results compared with those logged over the past several years, data showed Sunday.

The total output came to 1.57 million tons during the first six months, down 5.5 percent from a year earlier when the figure hit an all-time high, according to the data by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The decrease came as unfavorable weather conditions and the overall slump in demand resulted in a reduced harvest of sea mustard and flatfish, among others, the ministry noted.

But this year's figure is 22 percent higher compared with the average recorded over the past five years on the back of the growth in the output of several major items, such as abalone and rockfish.

Exports also rose 8.7 percent on-year in terms of volume to come to 44,600 tons and 10.5 percent in the total amount to US$450 million, according to the data.
