SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from Aug. 16 to Aug. 22, 2007.

16 The (North) Korean Central News Agency says a certificate of the Guinness Book of World Records, awarded for the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang," was handed to Song Sok-hwan, vice-minister of culture, by Wu Xiaohong, representative of the Guinness World Records Ltd., on a visit to the DPRK (North Korea) at May Day Stadium on Aug. 15.

   16 A delegation of the Kimilsung Socialist Youth League led by Secretary of its Central Committee Kil Chol-hyok leaves Pyongyang for Venezuela to participate in celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the movement of the world festival of youth and students and to visit Cuba.

   16 The KCNA says the DPRK women's football team trounced the Brazilian squad 4-3 on Aug. 15 in the semifinals of the 24th Universiad in Thailand to advance to the finals.

   16 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of greetings to El Haji Omar Bongo Ondimba, president of Gabon, on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of its independence.

   16 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia's president, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

   16 The KCNA says flood damage is increasing in the DPRK as continued heavy rainfall across the country has done huge damage to people's living and the national economy.

   16 The KCNA says the city of Pyongyang was damaged by an unprecedented flood.

   16 The KCNA says the 59th plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of (North) Korea took place in Hamhung on Aug. 14.

   16 A seminar of men of literature and arts takes place at the People's Palace of Culture to mark the 40th anniversary of the publication of leader Kim Jong-il's famous works on firmly establishing the monolithic ideological system of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK) in literature and arts, the KCNA says.

   17 The KCNA says a protocol of the 5th meeting of the DPRK-Syria Joint Economic Committee was signed in Syria on Aug. 14.

   17 The KCNA says Ri Un-gyong and Pak Chun-gyong, students of Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies, won the gold and bronze medals at the 6th World Students' Chinese Contest held in Changchun City, Jilin Province, China, from Aug. 4 to 6.

   17 The KCNA says the recent downpours and strong rainstorms hit the DPRK's coal industry hard.

   17 Kim Jong-il is presented with a gift by the China Development Bank via an official concerned.

   17 The KCNA says the railway transport system was heavily damaged by the torrential rains that started Aug. 7, but that it is being repaired.

   17 Kim Jong-il receives a message of sympathy from Chinese President Hu Jintao in connection with the heavy flood that hit some areas of the DPRK, causing big human and material losses.

   17 Daulat Hotma Audison Passaribu, Indonesian ambassador to the DPRK, hosts a reception on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the independence of Indonesia.

   17 The DPRK women's football team defeats its Russian counterpart 1-0 in the finals of the 24th Universiade held in Bangkok.

   17 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of sympathy to Alan Garcia Perez, president of Peru, in connection with an earthquake that hit the southern part of the country recently, causing heavy casualties and damage.

   17 Kim Jong-il is presented with a letter of thanks by Egyptian Ambassador to the DPRK Moustafa Mohamed Ahmed Al Hatter, doyen of the diplomatic corps in Pyongyang, for giving the corps a chance to visit Mt. Paektu on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of Korea's liberation.

   18 North Korea sends a telephone message to South Korea requesting the postponement of President Roh Moo-hyun's visit to Pyongyang, slated for late August, due to the recent flooding. The South accepted the request and proposed that the summit be held on Oct. 2-4 instead, and the North agreed.

   18 The KCNA says a campaign for recovering from the flood damage is being dynamically launched in the DPRK.

   18 A delegation of the Polish Foreign Ministry led by its Vice-Minister Witold Waszczykowski arrives in Pyongyang.

   19 Wreaths are laid before the grave of Kim Po-hyon, Kim Jong-il's great-grandfather, in Mangyongdae on the occasion of the 136th anniversary of his birth.

   19 The KCNA says Pyongyang citizens have mobilized to repair the flood damage, and that officials of the ministries and national institutions conducted work to repair flood damage at the Rungrado Recreation Ground in Pyongyang.

   20 Kim Yong-dae, vice-president of the SPA Presidium, meets with the delegation of the Polish Foreign Ministry led by its Vice-Minister Witold Waszczykowski at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   20 DPRK Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun meets with the delegation of the Polish Foreign Ministry.

   20 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Laszlo Solyom, president of Hungary, on the national day of his country.

   20 The KCNA says the delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies working in the DPRK inspected various areas of South Hamgyong Province that were hit by the recent flooding.

   20 Kim Jong-il receives a personal message of sympathy from President Roh Moo-hyun in connection with the floods in the North.

   21 A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK warns that if the U.S. persists in its "hostile" military actions, such as the ongoing U.S.-South Korea joint military exercise, the DPRK will take strong counter-measures different from the stand for dialogue it has so far maintained.

   21 The KCNA says the DPRK Red Cross Society is intensifying relief activities to repair the flood damage and to stabilize the people's lives in flood-stricken areas.

   21 Kim Jong-il sends a return letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao, expressing thanks to his message of sympathy in connection with the flood that hit the DPRK.

   22 The KCNA says ministries and national institutions are rendering sincere help to the inhabitants in the flood-stricken areas.

   22 The KCNA says the "Complete Collection of Kim Il-sung's Works" Vol. 71 has been brought out by the WPK Publishing House.

   22 A delegation of the Union of Agricultural Workers of (North) Korea headed by Kil Sang-bong, vice-chairman of its Central Committee, leaves Pyongyang to visit Mongolia and Vietnam.

   22 A national exhibition of youth scientific and technological achievements opens at the Three-Revolution Exhibition to mark the 80th anniversary of the Young Communist League of (North) Korea.
