Statement Made by Foreign Ministry Spokesman on Recent DPRK-U.S. Talks (KCNA/ September 3, 2007)
A spokesman for the DPRK (North Korea) Foreign Ministry gave the following answer to a question put by KCNA on Sept. 3 as regards the recent DPRK-U.S. talks held in Geneva: A meeting of the DPRK-U.S. working group for the six-party talks was held in Geneva from Sept. 1 to 2.
The meeting discussed the goals at the next phase for the implementation of the September 19 joint statement and reached a series of agreements.
Both sides discussed the issue of taking practical measures to neutralize the existing nuclear facilities in the DPRK within this year and agreed on them.
In return for this the U.S. decided to take such political and economic measures for compensation as delisting the DPRK as a terrorism sponsor and lifting all sanctions that have been applied according to the Trading with the Enemy Act.
This has laid a groundwork for making progress at the plenary session of the six-party talks to be held in the future.

Statement Made by Foreign Ministry Spokesman on Emergency Aid to DPRK (KCNA/ September 5, 2007) A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK (North Korea) gave the following answer to a question put by KCNA on Sept. 5 as regards the emergency aid given by the international community to the DPRK struck hard by flood: In August unusual torrential rain hit almost all parts of the DPRK, causing huge human and material losses.
Hundreds of people were reported dead or missing and more than 241,000 houses were destroyed, bringing the number of flood sufferers to at least 963,000.
More than 268,000 hectares of farm land were submerged, came under silt or were washed away. As a result, it is predicted this will adversely affect the agricultural production this year in no small measure.
The flood further increased the possibility of the spread of all kinds of contagious diseases. On top of this, at least 560 hospitals and more than 2,100 clinics were destroyed and lots of medical supplies washed away across the country to increase the damage.
This time the DPRK received medicines and other emergency aid materials given by international organizations including the UN and many countries including China, the U.S., the EU, Russia, Australia and Egypt with sincerity.
The DPRK feels thankful for this aid.
It will help the DPRK recover from the flood damage and bring the living of the inhabitants in the afflicted areas to normal.
