North Korea announces top 10 athletes of 2007 SEOUL (Yonhap) -- North Korea's news outlets announced on Dec. 27 the country's top 10 athletes of 2007.
The North's Korean Central Television Broadcasting Station quoted Ri Kyong-il, director of the national sports guidance committee, as saying the sportsmen and sportswomen fully displayed the dignity and honor of the country in international events.
According to the broadcaster, they include Kye Sun-hui, who won her fourth successive world judo championship this year, Ri Kum-suk and Ri Myong-ok. Kye captured the gold medal in the women's 57-kg category of the 2007 World Judo Championships in Brazil in September. Ri Kum-suk received the AFC Women's Player of the year award at the First AFC Women's Awards Ceremony by the Asian Football Confederation in early November.
Ryu Myong-ok emerged as a female world boxing champion in matches for the title of the WBCF in October.
The other seven athletes are from the weightlifting, shooting, gymnastics, diving and judo fields, according to the report.
The North has announced the list of top 10 athletes based on results at home and abroad each year since 1992.

North Korea evaluates major works of 2007 positively SEOUL (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Dec. 30 gave a positive evaluation of its major works during the year, saying, "Signal successes have been made in each part of the country such as politics, economy and culture in 2007." The Rodong Sinmun, organ of the North's ruling Workers' Party of (North) Korea, said, "The political and military might of the DPRK (North Korea) has been strikingly manifested and signal successes have been made in building an economic power this year." This year, the people of the DPRK commemorated the 95th anniversary of the late President Kim Il-sung's birth and celebrated the 75th birthday of the (North) Korean People's Army, the organ said.
The election of deputies to local power organs helped consolidate the foundation of the people's power in the DPRK, demonstrating the invincibility of (North) Korean-style socialism, it claimed.
In the economic sector, technology was improved and production was increased at major economic facilities, while such projects as the Samsu Power Station, the Thaechon Youth Power Station No. 4 and the Orangchon Power Station No. 1 were built and ones of key significance for developing the economy were pushed forward, it said.
"This year witnessed stirring events in the struggle for national reunification and in the development of the international relations to be recorded long in the nation's history," it said, citing the historic second inter-Korean summit in October.
