SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from Jan. 3 -Jan. 9, 2008.

3 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of greetings to General Than Shwe, chairman of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the independence of Myanmar.

   4 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il received gifts from Sazhi Umalatova, chairwoman of the Party for Peace and Unity of Russia, and V.V. Karpov, first secretary of the Central Committee, on the occasion of the New Year.

   4 The KCNA says the 10 best sports players and coaches in the DPRK (North Korea) for 2007, including female judoist Kye Sun-hui, have been selected.

   4 A mass rally by 100,000 Pyongyang citizens is held at Kimilsung Square to vow to thoroughly implement the tasks set forth in the New Year's joint editorial.

   4 A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK releases a statement regarding the delay in the implementation of the Oct. 3 agreement, which was reached at the six-party talks in October 2007.

   4 Government employees in different parts of the country do the first Friday-labor this year, the KCNA says.

   5 The KCNA says the Brazil-DPRK Friendship Parliamentary Group was inaugurated on Dec. 19 last year on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's assumption of office as supreme commander of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) and the 90th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong-suk, his late mother.

   5 The KCNA says a commemorative stamp was published in the DPRK to greet the 80th anniversary of the founding of the newspaper Saenal (New Day).

   6 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected the construction site of the Ryesonggang Power Station to encourage the builders there in the new year's drive.

   7 The Foreign Ministry arranges a friendly gathering with staff members of the Chinese embassy in Pyongyang on the occasion of the New Year.

   7 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected KPA Unit 776 honored with the title of Ojunghup-led 7th Regiment.

   7 Mass rallies are held in North and South Phyongan Provinces, South Hwanghae Province, Kangwon Province and South Hamgyong Province to vow to thoroughly implement the tasks set forth in the joint editorial for this year.

   8 The KCNA says artists of the KPA Art Studio and soldiers of the KPA have produced more than 300 works of art depicting Mt. Paektu in recent years.

   9 The KCNA says the WPK Publishing House published the Complete Collection of Kim Il-sung's Works Vol. 73.

   9 The KCNA says mass rallies to vow to thoroughly carry out the tasks in the joint New Year editorial were held in Jagang Province, North Hwanghae Province, North Hamgyong Province and Ryanggang Province.
