SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from May 15-21, 2008.
15 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the DPRK (North Korea), hosted a reception at his embassy in Pyongyang on May 14 in connection with the successful torch relay in the city for the 29th Olympic Games.
15 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), meets with a delegation of high school principals of the pro-Pyongyang General Association of Korean Residents in Japan headed by Jo Han-ju, chief inspector of the educational department of its Central Standing Committee, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.
15 Choe Thae-bok, chairman of the SPA, meets with Johannes Plug, member of the Federal Assembly from the Social-Democratic Party of Germany, and his party at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.
15 Iranian Ambassador to the DPRK Morteza Moradian and staff members of the Iranian embassy in Pyongyang visit the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace in Pyongyang on the occasion of the week of DPRK-Iran friendship.
15 The 34th National School Youth and Children Sports Contest for the Jongil Peak Cup opens in Pyongyang, bringing together at least 5,000 school youth and children selected from every province.
15 A briefing on Red Cross activities is held at the Taedong River Club for the Diplomatic Corps in Pyongyang on the occasion of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
15-16 A meeting of representatives of women from the two Koreas to implement the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration takes place at the North's scenic Mt. Kumgang resort.
16 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Hungarian Ambassador Sandor Kusai at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.
16 Choe Thae-bok meets with a delegation of the Communist Party of Portugal (CPP) headed by Albano Nunes, member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the CPP, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.
16 Kim Ryong-su, a Korean-Chinese and chief doctor of People's Hospital No. 1 in Yuhong District, Shenyang, China, is awarded the DPRK Degree of Medical Doctor.
16 The regular meeting of the International Association of Technical Survey and Classification Institutions in Pyongyang, which took place from May 13, comes to a close.
16 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Paul Biya, president of Cameroon, on the occasion of the 36th birthday of its republic.
17 The KCNA says the U.S. government officially announced its decision to offer 500,000 tons of food to the DPRK on May 16.
17 The KCNA says five kinds of stamps on the five revolutionary operas such as "The Flower Girl" and "The Sea of Blood" have been published in the DPRK.
17 The KCNA says the DPRK government offered US$100,000 to the Chinese government to help people in the quake-stricken areas.
17 The KCNA says the (North) Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, the Central Committee of the DPRK-China Friendship Association, the Central Committee of the Kimilsung Socialist Youth League and other institutions and social organizations sent messages of sympathy to their Chinese counterparts in connection with a strong earthquake that hit Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province of China on May 12, resulting in a huge number of casualties and heavy damage.
18 The KCNA says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il enjoyed an art performance given by members of the art groups of families of servicepersons of (North) Korean People's Army units 963, 966 and 233 who participated in the first contest of the second term of art groups of families of servicepersons.
19 Pak Ui-chun, minister of Foreign Affairs, meets separately with Morteza Moradian, new Iranian ambassador to the DPRK, and Sodovjamts Khurelbaatar, new Mongolian ambassador to the DPRK, when they paid courtesy calls on him.
19 The KCNA says a campaign for giving Pyongyang a new look has been vigorously launched with the approach of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the DPRK.

20 The KCNA says Hantoksu Pyongyang University of Light Industry has developed the technology for producing raw potato farina and applied it to industrial production.
20 The Workers' Party of (North) Korea Central Committee, the National Defense Commission and the Cabinet of the DPRK jointly send a wreath to the Chinese embassy in Pyongyang in connection with the strong earthquake.
20 Senior party and state officials visit the Chinese embassy in Pyongyang to express condolences regarding the strong earthquake.
20 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Leonel Fernandez Reyna upon his reelection as president of the Dominican Republic.
21 The KCNA says Premier Kim Yong-il sent a congratulatory message to Silvio Berlusconi upon his appointment as prime minister of Italy.
