SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from May 29-June 4, 2008.

  
May
29 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces hosted a reception for the military delegation of the Republic of Burundi visiting the DPRK (North Korea) on May 28.

   29 The KCNA says the Literature and Art Publishing House has recently published the "Collection of Songs of Five Revolutionary Operas", a collection of songs called "Love for My Country, Hatred against Enemy", and the book "World Literature Yesterday and Today (Vol.2)."

   29 The KCNA says Premier Kim Yong-il sent a congratulatory message to Sheikh Nasser Al-Muhammad Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah upon his reappointment as prime minister of Kuwait.

   29 Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the DPRK, and officials of his embassy help members of the DPRK-China Friendship Thaekam Co-op Farm in Sunan District, Pyongyang, in farm work.

   29 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), receives credentials from Yusuf Amuda Abubakar, Nigerian ambassador to the DPRK, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   29 The military delegation of Burundi led by Samuel Gahiro, chief of the General Staff of the National Defence Army, visits the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery on Mt.Taesong.

   29 An event is held in Pyongyang on the occasion of "World No Tobacco Day."
29 The KCNA says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il gave on-the-spot guidance at Hamhung University of Medicine in South Hamgyong Province.

   29-30 A conference of educators of the North and the South for implementing the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration takes place at Mt. Kumgang resort.

   30 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il gave on-the-spot guidance at the recreation ground at Mt. Paekun that is now being turned into a cultural rest area for the people.

   30 A schoolchildren's event for singing songs of best wishes for Kim Jong-il is held at the Open-air Theatre of the Youth Park in Pyongyang.

   31 A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry condemns the United States, saying it slandered the DPRK in the 2008 "advancing freedom and democracy report."
31 Wreaths are laid before the grave of Ri Po-ik, Kim Jong-il's great-grandmother, in Mangyongdae on the occasion of her 132nd birthday.

   31 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il gave on-the-spot guidance at the Hungnam Smeltery in South Hamgyong Province.

1 A joint friendship meeting between women and children from Pyongyang and foreign women and children takes place at the Mangyongdae Fun Fair on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the June 1 International Children's Day.

   2 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano on the occasion of its national day.

   3 Kim Jong-il, together with Kim Yong-nam, sends a congratulatory message to Raul Castro Ruz, president of Cuba, on the latter's 77th birthday.

   3 The KCNA says Kim Yong-il sent a congratulatory message to Ahmed Tidiane Souare upon his appointment as prime minister of Guinea.

   3 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Omani Ambassador to the DPRK Abdullah Bin Salleh Bin Hilal Al-Saadi at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   3 A delegation of the General Customs Bureau of the DPRK, headed by its Director Ji Yong-sik, leaves Pyongyang for China by air.

   3 A delegation of the "Russian Railways" Company led by Anatoli Volodin arrives in Rason by train.

   4 The KCNA says the opening ceremony of the sports contest for the Pochonbo Torch Prize is held at Hyesan Stadium in Ryanggang Province.

   4 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun meets with Abdullah Bin Salleh Bin Hilal Al-Saadi, new Omani ambassador to the DPRK, who paid a courtesy call on him.

   4 Jose Manuel Galego Montano, Cuban ambassador to the DPRK, and officials from his embassy help members of the DPRK-Cuba Friendship Hwasong Co-op Farm in Ryongsong District, Pyongyang in farm work.

   4 Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of Yang Hyong-man, an academician, professor and doctor at the State Academy of Sciences, expressing deep condolences over his death.

   4 The KCNA says Xi Jinping, vice president of China, will shortly pay an official goodwill visit to the DPRK at the invitation of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea and the government of the DPRK.
