SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from July 17-23, 2008.

17 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Premier Kim Yong-il sent a congratulatory message to Fouad Sanyora on his reappointment as prime minister of Lebanon on July 16.

   17 A delegation of the State Bureau of Archives led by Director Jon Song-guk leaves Pyongyang for Malaysia to participate in the 16th International Conference of Archives.

   17 Enrique Montoto Cruz, Cuban charge d'affaires ad interim, and staff members of the Cuban embassy in Pyongyang visit the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace on the occasion of the month of solidarity with the Cuban people.

   17 The military attaches corps in Pyongyang visit Panmunjom on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the end of Korean War, which the North calls "the victory in the Fatherland Liberation War."

   17 The KCNA says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il viewed a performance given by the State Academy Beryozka Dancing Troupe of Russia Named after N.S. Nadezhdina during its visit to the DPRK (North Korea).

   18 The KCNA says schoolchildren are enjoying pleasant summer camping at children's camps in scenic spots in different parts of the DPRK.

   18 A friendly meeting is held at DPRK-Mongolia Friendship Pyongyang Songyo Middle School No. 1 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the late President Kim Il-sung's visit to Mongolia.

   18 The KCNA says a new postage stamp has been released in commemoration of the leg of the 29th Olympic torch relay held in Pyongyang in April.

   18 A spokesman for the (North) Korean National Peace Committee issues a statement denouncing the joint military exercise between the South and the U.S. called "Ulji Freedom Guardian" that will be held Aug. 18-22.

   18 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of greetings to Alvaro Uribe Velez, president of Colombia, on the occasion of its national day.

   19 A DPRK delegation led by Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun leaves Pyongyang to participate in the ministerial meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum to be held in Singapore and the meeting of the foreign ministers of non-aligned countries in Iran.

   19 The KCNA says Merited Artist Choe Chang-ho, room chief of the (North) Korean Painting Group of the Mansudae Art Studio, was awarded "prize for the best art," the top award, at the 11th Beijing International Art Expo held in China recently.

   19 A spokesman for the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland in the North issues a statement denouncing the Japanese authorities' measure to identify Dokdo, a group of South Korean islets in the East Sea, as Japanese territory in the new teaching guidelines for primary and middle schools of Japan.

   19 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) Unit 3898 for training recruits.

   19 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected a battery of KPA Unit 205 honored with the title of Ojunghup-led 7th Regiment.

   20 The KCNA says "Among the People" Vol. 74, a collection of reminiscences about Kim Il-sung, was published by the Workers' Party of (North) Korea Publishing House.

   21 The KCNA says the (North) Korean Cultural Preservation Centre has recently published the e-edition of "History and Culture of River Taedong."
21 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Ismail Abdelrahman Ghoneim Hussein, Egyptian ambassador to the DPRK, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   22 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, president of Egypt, on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the July 23 revolution in Egypt.

   22 Staff members of the Vietnamese embassy in Pyongyang lay a wreath before the cemetery of "fallen heroes" of the KPA on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the end of Korean War.

   22 Enrique Montoto Cruz, charge d' affaires a.i., and staff members of the Cuban embassy in Pyongyang visit the Poman Fish Breeding Station and the Poman Co-op Farm in Sohung County, North Hwanghae Province.

   22 Talks between Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun and Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yong Boon Yeo are held in Singapore.

   23 A friendly gathering with staff members of the Egyptian embassy in Pyongyang is held at Kimsungju Primary School, the DPRK-Egypt friendship school, on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the July 23 revolution in Egypt.

   23 The KCNA says the bust of Ri In-mo, former unconverted long-term prisoner in the South, was erected in Tongil Street, Pyongyang.

   23 A national oratorical meeting of youth and students takes place at the Central Youth Hall in Pyongyang to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

   23 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Abdulmalek Sulaiman Mohammed Al-Muaalemi, ambassador e.p. of Yemen to the DPRK, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   23 Pak Ui-chun attends the informal six-way talks of foreign ministers before meeting with his U.S. counterpart Condoleezza Rice on the sidelines of the meeting in Singapore.
