SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from July 31-Aug. 6, 2008.

  
July
31 The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says the (North) Korean Democratic Women's Union met at the Mt. Taesong Pleasure Ground in Pyongyang July 30 to observe the 62nd anniversary of the enactment of the Law on Sex Equality.

   31 The KCNA says the 11th national exhibition of scientific and technical achievements in the field of public health, which opened on July 21 in Pyongyang, closed with due ceremony at the Three-Revolution Exhibition hall on July 30.

   31 The KCNA says the month of international solidarity with the Korean people was closed in Cuba with due ceremony on July 23.

   31 The KCNA says Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with a DPRK delegation headed by Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun at the conference of foreign ministers of non-aligned countries in Tehran on July 29.

   31 The KCNA says a meeting of foreign crewmen was held at Hungnam Port in South Hamgyong Province on July 30 to mark the "month of anti-U.S. joint struggle," which runs from June 25-July 27.

   31 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) and the DPRK's titular leader, sends a message of greetings to Pascal Couchepin, president of the Swiss Confederation, on Switzerland's national day.

   31 Wreaths are laid before a statue of Kang Pan-sok, grandmother of the North's leader Kim Jong-il, at the Chilgol Revolutionary Site and her grave in Mangyongdae on the 76th anniversary of her demise.

   31 The KCNA says Pak Ui-chun sent a congratulatory message to Tej Bunnag upon his appointment as foreign minister of Thailand on July 28.

   31 The KCNA reports that a mosaic, titled "Iron-willed Brilliant Commander Comrade Kim Il-sung Who Defeated the U.S. Imperialists" was erected at the Jonsung Revolutionary Site.

   31 Chang Ung, president of the International Taekwondo Federation, is awarded a doctorate in socio-politics of the DPRK.

   31 The KCNA says Kim Yong-nam sent a message of greetings July 30 to Thomas Boni Yayi, president of Benin, on the 48th anniversary of the independence of his country.

   31 U.S. Rev. Franklin Graham arrives in Pyongyang by air.

   31 The KCNA says a national workshop on agro-forestry was held at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang from July 29 to 31.

   31 The KCNA says a national academic symposium on the preservation of revolutionary relics was held on July 30 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Revolution Museums.

1 The KCNA says Premier Kim Yong-il sent a congratulatory message to Ignacio Milan Tang on July 30 on his appointment as prime minister of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

   1 Glyn Ford, a lawmaker of the British Labour Party in the European Parliament, arrives in Pyongyang by air.

   1 Kim Yong-nam meets with a delegation of officials of the Communist Party of China led by Li Jengzhen -- director of the Party History Research Centre of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China -- at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   1 The KCNA reports Kim Jong-il inspected the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) Unit 1622.

   1 Chinese Military, Naval and Air attache Sun Yanfeng arranges a reception at the embassy in Pyongyang on the 81st anniversary of the foundation of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

   1 Katharina Zellweger, country director of the Swiss Cooperation Office of DPRK of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, hosts a reception in observance of Switzerland's national day.

   1 Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding on the 46th anniversary of the country's.

   2 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski on the country's national day.

   2 A group of athletes led by Pak Hak-son, chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, leaves Pyongyang to participate in the 29th Olympic Games to be held in Beijing.

   2 Kim Yong-dae, vice president of the SPA Presidium, meets with U.S. Rev. Franklin Graham and his party at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   2 The KCNA says the Jonsung Cup sports tournament took place in Pyongyang and Wonsan on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the effective end of the Korean War.

   2 The KCNA says the ninth National Program Contest at Education Field was held in Pyongyang from July 31 to August 2.

   2 A friendship delegation from China's Jilin Yuwen Middle School led by Director Han Fei arrives in Pyongyang.

   2 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected a sub-unit of KPA Navy Unit 155 honored with the title of Ojunghup-led Seventh Regiment.

   2 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il attended a performance given by the art squad of KPA Unit 757.

   3 A spokesman for the unit of the KPA stationed in the area of Mt. Kumgang, the site of an inter-Korean tourism development near the communist state's southeastern coast, issues a special statement regarding the July 11th shooting of a South Korean woman by a KPA soldier.

   3 A delegation from Minju Joson led by its Associate Editor Hong Tong-chol leaves Pyongyang to visit China.

   3 Pak Ui-chun meets with U.S. Rev. Franklin Graham and his party at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   4 An event takes place at the People's Palace of Culture to mark World Breastfeeding Week.

   4 Kim Yong-nam meets with Guy Dupre, secretary general of the International Liaison Committee for Reunification and Peace in Korea, and his family at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   4 The KCNA says heavy rains in the DPRK from August 1 to 3 caused heavy losses to various sectors of the national economy.

   4 The grand gymnastic and artistic performance Arirang is staged at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang as the first presentation in the year.

   4 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected KPA Unit 1353.

   4 A meeting is held at the People's Palace of Culture to mark the publication of the 5,000th issue of "New Technology Information."

   5 A delegation of the Russian Railways Company led by Vice-President Alexei Mersiyanov arrives in Pyongyang.

   5 A meeting with members of the friendship delegation of Jilin Yuwen Middle School of China is held at Changdok School in Pyongyang.

   5 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected KPA Unit 3704, which is honored with the title of Ojunghup-led Seventh Regiment.

   5 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to President of Cote d'Ivoire Laurent Gbagbo for the 48th anniversary of the independence of the country.

   6 A friendly gathering between schoolchildren in Pyongyang and members of the camping groups from different countries is held at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace.

   6 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected the Reconnoitering Company of KPA Unit 891.
