SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from Aug. 21-27, 2008.

21 The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sent condolences to Rupiah Banda, vice president of Zambia, on Aug. 20 with regards to the death of Zambian President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa.

   21 The KCNA says the Office of the Presidential Envoy to Los Rios Province of Ecuador will award the title of honorary citizen and a key to the province to Kim Jong-il to mark the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK/ North Korea).

   21 Kim Jung-rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK), meets with a delegation of the Lao Women's Union headed by Central Committee President Sysay Leudedmounsone at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   21 A DPRK friendship delegation led by Hong Son-ok, vice chairwoman of the (North) Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries -- who is also vice chairwoman of the (North) Korean Committee for Solidarity with the World People -- leaves Pyongyang by air to visit Finland, Sweden and Denmark.

   21 A national student exhibition on science and technology opens at the Three-Revolution Exhibition Hall in Pyongyang to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK.

   21 A meeting between officials of the Central Committee of the (North) Korean Democratic Women's Union and the members of the delegation of the Lao Women's Union is held in Pyongyang.

   21 Meetings are held by local youths, workers and members of the North's General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea in Pyongyang.

   22 The North's Korean Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Labor Party of South Korea issue a joint statement to denounce Japan's claims over the Dokdo islets and the alleged suppression of a pro-Pyongyang organization in Japan.

   22 A meeting of agricultural workers takes place on the Kosan Fruit Farm in Kangwon Province to mark the 48th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's start of Songun (military-first) politics.

   22 A reception is given in Pyongyang to mark the 41st anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Yong-il attending.

   23 A documentary film titled "The Respected Comrade Supreme Commander Is Our Destiny" is screened at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang to mark the 48th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's start of Songun politics.

   24 The KCNA says DPRK athletes won four gold, five silver and three bronze medals at the 2008 International Free Flying Aero Model Contest for the Mongolian Cup held in Mongolia from Aug. 12-15.

   24 A national meeting takes place at the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang to mark the 48th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's start of the Songun politics.

   24 A meeting is held by foreign crewmen at Haeju Port in South Hwanghae Province to mark the 48th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's start of Songun politics.

   25 The KCNA says Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh will soon pay an official goodwill visit to the DPRK at the invitation of Premier Kim Yong-il.

   25 Student dance parties take place in various parts of the country to celebrate the 48th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's start of Songun politics.

   25 A national meeting takes place at the Central Workers' Hall in Pyongyang to mark the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Anti-Japanese Trade Union by the late President Kim Il-sung.

   26 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Australian Ambassador to the DPRK Peter Jason Rowe at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   26 The KCNA says the 16th national contest among middle schoolers took place at Kimjongsuk Middle School No. 1 from Aug. 20-25.

   26 The DPRK's Olympic delegation led by Pak Hak-son -- chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission -- returns home after participating in the 29th Olympic Games held in Beijing.

   26 The International Friendship Exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of its founding. The North says the exhibition houses more than 222,500 valuable gifts presented to Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il.

   26 A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry issues a statement on its decision to suspend its disabling of North Korean nuclear facilities in protest of the U.S.'s decision to delay the removal of the North from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.

   26 Pak Ui-chun meets with the Australian Ambassador, who paid a courtesy call on him.

   26 The KCNA says a national students sports contest for the September 5 Cup was held in Hamhung, South Hamgyong Province, from Aug. 18-26.

   27 The KCNA says Kim Yong-nam on Aug. 22 sent a message of sympathy to Abdelaziz Bouteflika, president of Algeria, following a bomb explosion in Algeria that left dozens of innocent people dead and wounded.

   27 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of sympathy to Kurmanbek Bakiyev, president of Kyrgyzstan, after the recent airliner crash in Kyrgyzstan that claimed a number of casualties.
