SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from Sept. 25-Oct. 1, 2008.

  
September
25 The North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says a national symposium on medical science was held in Pyongyang from Sept. 22 to 24.

   25 The KCNA says a seminar took place at the Kimchaek University of Technology Gymnasium in Pyongyang on Sept. 24 to mark the college's 60th founding anniversary.

   25 The KCNA reports that the "Complete Collection of Kim Il-sung's Works," Vol. 76, was published by the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Publishing House.

   25 A delegation of senior political officers from the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) led by Le Van Dung, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and head of the VPA General Political Department, places a wreath before the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery on Mt. Taesong near Pyongyang.

   25 The VPA delegation and a delegation of the Socialist Party of Romania led by Vasile Orleanu, chairman of the Supreme Council of the party, visit the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang, the resting place of Kim Il-sung's embalmed body, to pay homage to the North's late founder and head of state.

   25 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), meets with the VPA delegation at Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   25 The KCNA reports on the 60th anniversary of the Juche-based system of awarding state academic degrees and titles. Juche, or "self-reliance," is the state ideology of North Korea.

   25 A meeting and film screening is held at the Taedonggang Club in Pyongyang for the Diplomatic Corps to mark the 50th anniversaries of the DPRK-China Friendship Association and the China-Korea Friendship Association. DPRK is an abbreviation for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

   25 An opening ceremony for Sino-DPRK medical support is held at the Pyongyang Ophthalmic Hospital on the 50th anniversaries of the formation of the DPRK-China Friendship Association and the China-Korea Friendship Association.

   25 A national exhibition of mass consumption goods is opened in Pyongyang.

   25 The Central Committee of the DPRK-China Friendship Association hosts a reception at Pyongyang Koryo Hotel to mark the 50th anniversaries of the DPRK-China Friendship Association and the China-Korea Friendship Association.

   25 A national angling contest is held in Pyongyang "amid the ever-flowering cultural and emotional life of the people," the KCNA reports.

   25 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a congratulatory message to Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo on the latter's appointment as prime minister of Togo.

   26 Yang Hyong-sop, vice president of the SPA Presidium, meets with Ismail Abdelrahman Ghoneim Hussein, newly-appointed Egyptian ambassador to the DPRK, who paid a courtesy call at Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   26 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Ali Abdullah Saleh, president of Yemen, on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the Sept. 26 revolution in his country.

   26 The KCNA says DPRK Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sent a message of greetings to S. Batbold upon his appointment as foreign minister of Mongolia on Sept. 24.

   26 Choe Thae-bok, secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK, meets with the delegation of the Socialist Party of Romania at Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   26 A protocol on the 27th meeting of the Inter-Governmental Economic and Scientific and Technological Consultative Committee and a protocol on the exchange of goods for 2009 are signed between the DPRK and Cuba with due ceremony in Pyongyang.

   26 The 11th Pyongyang International Film Festival, which opened on Sept. 17, closes with due ceremony at the Pyongyang International Cinema House. The DPRK Cabinet gives a reception at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang in connection with the close of the festival.

   26 A meeting takes place at the People's Palace of Culture to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Kimchaek University of Technology.

   27 The KCNA says rice harvesting has begun in rural areas across the country.

   27 The North's Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries and the Central Committee of the DPRK-China Friendship Association holds a reception at Chongryu Restaurant in Pyongyang on the occasion of the 59th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

   27 A delegation of the DPRK Measure Committee for Demanding Compensation to Comfort Women for the Japanese Army and the Victims of Forcible Drafting led by Chairperson Hong Son-ok leaves Pyongyang to participate in an annual meeting of the International Solidarity Council Demanding the Settlement of the Past Wrongs of Japan to be held in Netherlands.

   27 A delegation of training and education officers of the Syrian army led by Najib Barakat, director general for training, arrives in Pyongyang.

   27 Kim Yong-nam meets with the delegation of the China-Korea Friendship Association led by Chairman Wu Donghe at Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   27 Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK Liu Xiaoming holds a reception at his embassy on the occasion of the 59th anniversary of China's founding.

   27 Kim Yong-il sends a congratulatory message to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen upon his reelection.

  27 The VPA delegation leaves Pyongyang.

   27 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Seretse Khama Ian Khama, president of Botswana, on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of its independence.

   28 The KCNA says a joint communique on establishing diplomatic relations between the governments of the DPRK and the Republic of Kenya was published in New York on Sept. 26.

   28 Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Hor Nam Hong upon his reappointment as deputy prime minister of Cambodia and minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

   29 A delegation of the General Department of Information of the Foreign Ministry of Thailand headed by its Director-General Tharit Charungvat arrives in Pyongyang by air.

   29 Kim Yong-il sends a message of sympathy to Muhammad Nazi Otri, prime minister of the Cabinet of Syria, in connection with the recent terrorism that occurred in Damascus, claiming casualties.

   29 Pak Ui-chun sends a message of sympathy to Walid Al Moualem, minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria, in connection with the Sept. 27 terrorist bombing in Damascus, which killed 17 and wounded 14 others.

  29 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of sympathy to Syrian President Bashar Al Assad in connection with the terrorist bombing.

   30 The KCNA says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il together with Kim Yong-nam and Kim Yong-il sent a message of greetings to Chinese President Hu Jintao, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, and Wen Jiabao, premier of the State Council of China, on the occasion of the 59th anniversary of the founding of China.

   30 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Peter Hughes, ambassador of Britain to the DPRK, at Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   30 Officials from DPRK's ministries, national institutions and Ryanggang Province visit different parts of Taehongdan County in Ryanggang to mark the 10th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's essay, "On making a revolution in potato farming."

   30 A national meeting takes place in Taehongdan County, Ryanggang Province, to mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of Kim Jong-il's essay, "On making a revolution in potato farming."

   30 A music and dance performance is given by the Ryanggang Provincial Art Troupe at the Taehongdan County Cultural Hall to mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of Kim Jong-il's famous essay, "On making a revolution in potato farming."

   30 An exhibition of Cuban children's illustrations is held at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace in Pyongyang to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the DPRK.

   1 U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill and his party arrive in Pyongyang.

   1 Pak Ui-chun meets with the delegation of the General Department of Information of the Foreign Ministry of Thailand headed by its Director-General, Tharit Charungvat.

   1 The 10th National Exhibition of Invention and New Technology opens with due ceremony at the Three-Revolution Exhibition Hall in Pyongyang.

   1 A spokesman for the North's Korean National Peace Committee issues a statement condemning the South Korea-U.S. mutual defense treaty.

   1 Ko Tok-u, vice chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the pro-Pyongyang General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, arrives in Pyongyang.

   1 The KCNA reports that a photo exhibition is being held at the Taehongdan County Cultural Hall in Ryanggang Province to mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of Kim Jong-il's essay on potato farming.
