SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from Oct. 30-Nov. 5, 2008.

30 The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports that Jean Pierre De Margerie, the acting resident coordinator for the UN to the DPRK (North Korea), hosted a reception in Pyongyang on Oct. 29 to mark United Nations Day.

   30 The KCNA reports a national science and technology presentation on the field of information science, as well as the 20th national acupuncture and moxibustion medical science symposium and the 4th national Kyongrak symposium were held at the Grand People's Study House in Pyongyang from Oct. 27 to 29.

   30 Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Nyan Win returns home after winding up a four day-visit to the DPRK.

   30 The KCNA says Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sent a message of greetings to his Romanian counterpart Lazar Comanescu on Oct. 26 to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the DPRK and Romania.

   30 A funeral is held in Pyongyang for Pak Song-chol, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK) and honorary vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA).

   30 A spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry slams the recent military strike against Syria by the U.S.

   30 The KCNA reports that Kim Yong-nam, president of the SPA Presidium, sent a message of sympathy to Ali Abdullah Saleh, president of Yemen, on Oct. 29 over the recent torrential downpour which hit various provinces of Yemen and caused significant destruction and loss of life.

   30 Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the DPRK, along with staff members from the embassy visit the DPRK-China Friendship Thaekam Cooperative Farm in Sunan District, Pyongyang, and help local farmers in the harvest.

   30 A friendship gathering is held under the sponsorship of the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs to mark the 60th anniversary of the opening of diplomatic ties between the DPRK and eastern European countries.

   30 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Abdelaziz Bouteflika, president of Algeria, to mark the 54th anniversary of the start of the revolution in Algeria.

   31 The KCNA says exhibitions of Korean photography, fine art and handicrafts were held in the cities of Bucharest and Tirgoviste, in Dimbovita County, from Oct. 15 to 27 to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the DPRK and Romania.

   31 The KCNA says the April 25 Film Studio of the North's Korean People's Army (KPA) produced the feature film "Call of Naval Port."
31 The KCNA says Premier Kim Yong-il sent a message of greetings to Baldwin Spencer, prime minister of the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, on Oct. 27 to mark the 27th anniversary of the country's independence.

   31 The KCNA says a DPRK Red Cross meeting was held at the Chollima House of Culture in Pyongyang on Oct. 29 and 30.

   31 The 11th People's Sports Contest of the DPRK holds the closing ceremony at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium.

   31 The 39th annual sports contest of artists and performers is held at Kimilsung Stadium.

   31 A meeting of former exemplary youth league officials and participants in the national conference of active members of primary organizations of the Kimilsung Socialist Youth League is held at the Central Youth Hall in Pyongyang.

   31 North Korean leader Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to be placed on the bier of the late Kil Su-am, prominent member of the April 15 Writing Group, expressing deep condolences over the author's death.

   31 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Mohamed Nasheed on his election as president of the Republic of Maldives.

1 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il, together with service members of the KPA, viewed a football match between the KPA teams Mangyongbong and Jebi, held to mark the close of the 11th People's Sports Contest.

   2 The KCNA says that on Oct. 27 Kim Yong-nam sent a message of greetings to Nicholas Liverpool, president of the Commonwealth of Dominica, to mark the 30th anniversary of the country's independence.

   3 The KCNA reports significant changes in the appearance of a number of rural villages in the socialist North in recent years.

   4 Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Alexis Thambwe Mwamba upon his appointment as foreign minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

   4 A delegation of the Foreign Ministry, headed by Vice Minister Kim Yong-il, leaves Pyongyang by air for a tour of several Southeast Asian countries.

   4 The 6th national Korean dress exhibition opens at Central Youth Hall.

   4 The 9th national education software exhibition opens at the Three-Revolution Exhibition in Pyongyang.

   4 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected a drill by a sub-unit of KPA Unit 534.

   4 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected KPA Unit 2200 and watched a military training exercise.

   4 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Rupiah Bwezani Banda upon his inauguration as Zambian president.

   5 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il and several KPA service members attended an art performance by the Merited State Chorus, "Unhasu," the Mansudae Art Troupe, the Phibada Opera Troupe and the National Art Troupe.
