   *** CHRONOLOGICAL REVIEW

SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from April 9-15.

  April
9 The first session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) is held at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang, attended by leader Kim Jong-il. During the meeting, North Korea revised its Socialist Constitution for the first time in 11 years and reelected Kim as chairman of the National Defense Commission (NDC).

   10 The 26th April Spring Friendship Art Festival opens with due ceremony, attended by Yang Hyong-sop, vice president of the SPA Presidium, and Kim Ki-nam, secretary of the Workers' Party.

   10 About 100,000 Pyongyang citizens rally at Kimilsung Square in Pyongyang to congratulate leader Kim Jong-il on his reelection as NDC chairman.

   10 The Ministry of People's Security and the People's Armed Forces Ministry hold separate meetings in Pyongyang to congratulate Kim Jong-il on his reelection as NDC chairman.

   10 Kim Jong-il receives a message from Chinese President Hu Jintao congratulating him on his reelection as the NDC chairman.

   11 Kim Jong-il receives a message from Russian President D. Medvedev commemorating the 97th birthday of late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung which falls on April 16.

   11 A reception is arranged by the organizing committee for the 26th April Spring Friendship Art Festival in honor of the festival's participants at Yanggakdo International Hotel in Pyongyang.

   11 Kim Yong-nam, president of the SPA Presidium, sends a congratulatory message to Ivan Gasparovic upon his reelection as president of Slovakia.

   11 Kim Jong-il receives a congratulatory floral basket from the Chinese government upon his reelection as NDC chairman.

   11 An Indonesian government cultural delegation, led by General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Wardiyatmo, flies into Pyongyang for a visit.

   11 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Datuk Anifah Aman upon his appointment as foreign minister of Malaysia.

   12 The IAAF-22nd Mangyongdae Prize Marathon Race is held to commemorating the anniversary of Kim Il-sung's birth.

   12 Trade union members and agricultural workers hold separate meetings in Pyongyang to congratulate Kim Jong-il on his reelection as NDC chairman.

   13 Yang Hyong-sop meets with a delegation from Fenghuang Satellite TV of Hong Kong, led by Liu Changle, chairman of the Board of Directors and administrative manager, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   13 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Abdelaziz Bouteflika on his reelection as president of Algeria.

   13 The 11th Kimilsungia Festival is opened in Pyongyang with a ceremony displaying more than 20,000 potted Kimilsungias, a type of orchid named after the late founder.

   13 Ismail Ahmed Mohamed Hasan, Palestinian ambassador to Pyongyang, arranges a reception at his embassy on the occasions of Kim Il-sung's birth anniversary and the 16th anniversary of Kim Jong-il's first election as chairman of the NDC, attended by Choe Thae-bok, chairman of the SPA, and Kim Yong-jin, minister of education.

   13 Meetings take place in the capitals of South Pyongan, South Hwanghae, North Hwanghae, Kangwon and Ryanggang provinces to celebrate Kim Jong-il's reelection as NDC chairman.

   14 The North's Foreign Ministry issues a statement challenging the U.N. Security Council's condemnation of its rocket launch. The North said it was withdrawing from nuclear disarmament talks and restoring its nuclear facilities in protest.

   14 Kim Jong-il issues Order No. 0029 in his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army to promote army generals.

   14 A national meeting is held in Pyongyang to commemorate the anniversary of Kim Il-sung's birth, attended by Kim Yong-nam.

   14 A Mongolian government delegation, headed by U. Urantogos, arrives in Pyongyang to commemorate Kim Il-sung's birthday anniversary.

   14 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a congratulatory message to Milo Djukanovic on his reelection as Montenegro's prime minister.

   14 Kim Yong-il sends a congratulatory message to Lars Loekke Rasmussen upon his appointment as prime minister of Denmark.

   14 A gathering with staff members of the Indonesian embassy in Pyongyang takes place at the Taedong River Diplomatic Corps Club, on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the historic visit to Indonesia paid by Kim Jong-il in company with Kim Il-sung.

   14 A meeting of Koreans in Japan is held at the Korean Hall of Culture in Tokyo to celebrate Kim Jong-il's reelection as chairman of the NDC.

   15 The KCNA says Meetings and rallies were held in cities, counties, factories, enterprises and farms to celebrate Kim Jong-il's reelection as chairman of the NDC.

   15 Senior party and state officials visit Mangyongdae and the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang where the Kim Il-sung's embalmed body is laid in state to pay homage to the late leader on the occasion of the 97th anniversary of Kim Il-sung's birth.

   15 Evening galas of youth and students take place in Pyongyang and in other parts of the country to commemorate the 97th anniversary of Kim Il-sung's birth.

   15 The KCNA says a grand evening of fireworks was held on the bank of the Taedong River in Pyongyang on the previous day to commemorate the 97th anniversary of Kim Il-sung's birth. Kim Jong-il unexpectedly attended the firework display to honor his late father.
