SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea between Sept. 10-16, 2009.

10 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a congratulatory message to the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on his 44th birthday.

   10 North Korean leader Kim Jong-il sends a congratulatory message to the Syrian President on his birthday.

   10 Kim Yong-nam meets with the delegation of Kyodo News of Japan led by its President Satoshi Ishikawa who paid a courtesy call on him at Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   10 A national mass consumption goods exhibition opens with due ceremony in Pyongyang.

   11 South Korea's Unification Ministry says North Korea withdrew its earlier demand for a four-fold wage increase for its workers at Kaesong Industrial Complex.

   11 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sent a message of greetings to Aichatou Mindaoudou, minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Niger, on Sept. 5 on the occasion of the 35th year of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

   12 The delegation of Kyodo News of Japan led by its President Satoshi Ishikawa leaves Pyongyang after wrapping up its visit to North Korea.

   12 A delegation of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany led by Wolfgang Huber, its chairman, flies into Pyongyang.

   13 The KCNA says the North Korean embassy in Havana hosted a reception on Sept. 7 on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the founding of the North.

   13 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il visited Combined Unit 597 of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) Navy and watched its combined maneuvers.

   14 Kim Jong-il sends a congratulatory message to Dmitri Anatolievich Medvedev, president of Russia, on his birthday.

   14 Kim Yong-nam meets with Noorullah Khan, ambassador of Pakistan to Pyongyang, who paid a farewell call on him at Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   14 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il provided field guidance to the Pukjung Machine Complex and the Rakwon Machine Complex.

   14 A 2009-2011 working plan for cooperation in the field of public health and medical science between the ministries of Public Health of North Korea and China is signed.

   15 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Daniel Ortega Saavedra, president of Nicaragua, on the occasion of the 188th anniversary of its independence.

   15 A national scientific and technological symposium in the field of nature conservation is held in Pyongyang.

   15 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Juan Bautista Lena Casas, Spanish ambassador to North Korea, at Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   15 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Alvaro Colom, president of Guatemala, on the occasion of the 188th anniversary of its independence.

   15 Economic and commercial councilors at the Chinese embasssy and members of the Jilin and Liaoning provincial foreign trade missions of China in Pyongyang visited the Taean Heavy Machine Complex.

   15 A delegation of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party headed by Asang Laoly, member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the LPRP and chairman of the Control Commission of its Central Committee who doubles as vice-prime minister and president of the State Inspection Commission of Laos, flies into Pyongyang.

   15 The Russian State Academic People's Chorus Named after M.E. Pyatnichki led by Head and Manager Aleksandra Permyakova arrives in Pyongyang.

   15 A delegation led by Kim Chin-kyung, founding-president of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, arrives in Pyongyang to take part in the ceremony for the completion of the first-phase construction of the university.

   15 The Central Committee of the Workers' Party gives a reception at Mansudae Assembly Hall in honor of the visiting delegation of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

   15 The 15th round of talks on the exchange and cooperation in meteorological science and technology between the North's State Hydro-meteorological Administration and China's Bureau of Meteorology is held in Beijing.

   15-16 Demonstration performances are given in Pyongyang by the Wushu demonstration group of China marking the "year of the DPRK (North Korea)-China friendship."

   16 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to the Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa observing the 199th anniversary of Mexico's independence.

   16 A ceremony marking the completion of the first-phase construction of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology is held at the campus in Pyongyang, with a 20-member South Korean delegation and North Korean education officials attending.

   16 The SPA Presidium and the International Affairs Department of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK) send wreaths to the Cuban embassy in Pyongyang to mourn the death of Juan Almeida Bosque, a Cuban vice president and hero of the country's 1959 revolution.

   16 Talks between the delegations of the WPK, led by Secretary Choe Thae-bok, and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, led by Secretary Asang Laoly, are held in Pyongyang.

   16 A ceremony is held in Pyongyang to award state academic degrees and titles to intellectuals in recognition of their contributions to scientific research and the education of the younger generation.

   16 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun confers with Noorullah Khan, Pakistani ambassador to North Korea, who paid a farewell visit to him.

   16 Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, special envoy of President Hu Jintao, flies into Pyongyang.

   16 A reception hosted by the North Korean government is held in Pyongyang in honor of the Chinese special envoy.

   16 South Korea's Unification Ministry says two Koreas agreed to a 5-percent wage raise for North Koreans working at the Kaesong Industrial Park.
