N. Korea's latest missile launch breaches U.N. resolutions: S. Korea
By Lee Chi-dong SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's latest firing of short-range missiles violates U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban the communist nation from engaging in ballistic missile activity, a South Korean foreign ministry official said Tuesday.
"We are considering how to respond to North Korea's behavior, including whether to issue a statement condemning the missile launch," the official told Yonhap News Agency, asking not to be named. | | Data picture |
He added government officials concluded that the North's launch of five KN-02 surface-to-surface missiles into the East Sea on Monday contravenes U.N. Security Council resolutions 1695, 1718, and 1874 adopted after its missile and nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. The resolutions bar North Korea from all activity related to ballistic missiles.
The KN-02, an upgraded version of the Russian SS-21, is known to have a range of up to 120 kilometers.
"It is a kind of ballistic missile," the official said. "The U.N. Security Council is also expected to decide its own response to North Korea's act."
