SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea between Dec. 31, 2009 - Jan. 6, 2010.

31 North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il sends a message of greetings to Raul Castro Ruz, second secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, on the 51st anniversary of the victorious Cuban revolution.

   31 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK/ North Korea) has brought out new stamps (a souvenir sheet and a sheetlet) in remembrance of Juche 98 (2009) when the (North) Korean people's dreams "came true".

   31 Rodong Sinmun says it is necessary for all the progressives of the world to unite in order to ensure the victory of anti-imperialist and independent forces and "accomplish the cause of peace in the struggle against the imperialists".

   31 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of sympathy to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono following the death of Abdurrahman Wahid, former Indonesian president.

1 Rodong Sinmun, Josoninmingun and Chongnyonjonwi issue a joint editorial titled "Bring about a radical turn in the people's standard of living by accelerating the development of light industry and agriculture once again this year that marks the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea" on the occasion of the New Year. The editorial stresses the need for efforts to improve the standard of living, better inter-Korean ties and promote national reconciliation and cooperation.

   1 Kim Jong-il receives a congratulatory message from the Central Standing Committee of the pro-Pyongayng General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) on the New Year.

   1 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to So Man-sul, chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, on the New Year.

   1 Kim Jong-il is presented with a message of New Year greetings by the Central Committee of the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front (AINDF).

   1 Senior party and state officials visit the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang to pay homage to President Kim Il-sung on the occasion of the New Year.

   1 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Omar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir, president of Sudan, on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of its independence.

   2 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il receives messages and letters of greetings from organizations of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan and Koreans in Japan on the occasion of the New Year.

   2 The KCNA says a stamp has been issued in the DPRK to greet the New Year.

   2 A mass rally of Pyongyangites is held at Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang to vow to thoroughly implement the militant tasks set forth in the joint New Year editorial.

   3 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Prime Minister of Myanmar Thein Sein on the occasion of the 62nd independence day of Myanmar.

   3 Rodong Sinmun dedicates a signed article to the 18th anniversary of the publication of leader Kim Jong-il's work "The Historical Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of Our Party".

   3 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Than Shwe, chairman of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of independence of Myanmar.

   3 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il visited the construction sites of the Huichon Power Station and encouraged the builders who launched a new year campaign.

   3 Mass rallies of South Pyongan and Jagang Provinces take place in Pyongsong and Kanggye cities to carry through the militant tasks set forth in the joint New Year editorial.

   4 Posters have been brought out in North Korea to encourage the people to fulfill the important tasks set forth in the joint New Year editorial of the country's major newspapers.

   4 The Juvenile Film Production Company of Pyongyang University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts has recently produced a documentary film "We Will Take Revenge Generation after Generation."

   4 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il gave field guidance to the Jaeryong Mine alive with the new year drive.

   4 The SPA Presidium says in its decree that Rason City was designated as a municipality.

   5 Bianka Rodriguez Suero, charge d'affaires ad interim, and staff members of the Cuban embassy visit the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the victory in the Cuban revolution.

   5 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected a sub-unit of the Seoul Ryu Kyong-su 105 Guards Tank Division of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) honored with the title of O Jung-hup-led Seventh Regiment.

   6 Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of KPA Vice Marshal Pak Ki So, expressing deep condolences over his death.

   6 The KCNA claims numerous U.S. human rights abuses have been disclosed and censured by the international community, including CIA-operated secret prisons recently discovered in Lithuania.

   6 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il provided field guidance at the construction site of the Ryesong River Youth Power Station No. 2, which has reached the phase of completion.
