SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea between Jan. 28-Feb. 3.

  
January
28 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says that an American was detained for trespassing on the border of North Korea with China on Jan. 25 and is now under investigation.

   28 Rodong Sinmun says in a commentary that a new arms race now under way in the international arena is entirely attributable to U.S. military hegemony.

   28 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of sympathy to Woldegiorgis Girma, president of Ethiopia, in connection with the deadly crash of an Ethiopian airliner.

   28 Le Van Cu, Vietnamese ambassador to North Korea, hosts a reception on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the DPRK (North Korea) and Vietnam.

   28 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to the 14th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union to be opened in Addis Ababa.

   28 The DPRK embassy in Hanoi gives a reception on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and Vietnam.

   29 Rodong Sinmun says that war can be averted and the people's desire for peace realized only through a staunch struggle against imperialist war policies.

   29 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Nickolay Mladenov on his appointment as foreign minister of Bulgaria and to Ricardo Patino on his appointment as foreign minister of Ecuador.

   29 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Mahinda Rajapaksa on his reelection as president of Sri Lanka.

   30 The KCNA reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il provided field guidance to the renovated Hyangsan Hotel.

   30 The KCNA says a list of the best players of various events for Juche 98 (2009) has been released in the DPRK, including Ri Myong-guk and Kim Yong-ae in men's and women's football, respectively.

   30 Rodong Sinmun says that to meet the basic demand of each nation, to live and develop independently, it is necessary to wage a vigorous struggle against imperialist aggression, interference and domination.

   31 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il enjoyed an art performance given by the itinerant youth art squad of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) at the theatre of the renovated Hyangsan Hotel, together with KPA servicepersons.

   31 The KCNA reports Kim Jong-il inspected the command of KPA Large Combined Unit 630.

   31 Kim Jong-il sends a congratulatory message to Nong Duc Manh, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the DPRK and Vietnam.

   31 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Nguyen Tan Dung, prime minister of Vietnam, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

   31 Choe Thae-bok, chairman of the Supreme People's Assembly, sends a message of greetings to Nguyen Phu Trong, chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

1 Kim Yong-nam is presented with credentials by Edward Pietrzyk, ambassador of Poland to the DPRK, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   2 The KCNA reports a poster of the 14th Kimjongilia Festival, to be opened to mark the 68th birthday of leader Kim Jong-il on Feb. 16, has been produced.

   2 Rodong Sinmun says the most realistic way of preventing another war is to replace the outdated Armistice Agreement with a peace treaty as soon as possible for the purpose of establishing a lasting peace-keeping regime on the Korean Peninsula.

   2 Kim Jong-il sends a message of greetings to Nong Duc Manh, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of its founding.

   2 The KCNA says the (North) Korean April 26 Children's Film Studio has released new films, including "A Story about Three Brothers" based on a folktale told by the late President Kim Il-sung.

   2 The KCNA reports Kim Jong-il was presented with a gift by the secretary general of the Peruvian-Korean Institute of Culture and Friendship for his birthday.

   2 Premier Kim Yong-il and Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the SPA Presidium, meet with Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to North Korea.

   2 The KCNA says Four kinds of individual stamps have been brought out in the DPRK with the birthday of Kim Jong-il approaching.

   2 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Wonphyong Taehung Fishery Station in Kumya County, South Hamgyong Province.

   2 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Oldemiro Baloi on his reappointment as minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique.

   3 Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Ratnasiri Wickremanawake, prime minister of Sri Lanka, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of its independence.

   3 Kim Yong-nam meets with Chinese Ambassador to North Korea Liu Xiaoming who paid a farewell call on him at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   3 The KCNA says the Order of North Korea Friendship 1st Class was awarded to Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to North Korea.

   3 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Mahinda Rajapaksa, president of Sri Lanka, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of its independence.

   3 A national meeting is held at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang to mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the movement of the April 15 technical innovation shock brigade.
