(EDITORIAL from the Korea Herald on March 15)
Hell on earth
North Korea's human rights record remains "deplorable" according to the U.S. State Department's annual Human Rights Report released last week.
The scathing review of the human rights conditions in the North draws a grim picture of a country where human rights abuses are rampant and where the government controls all aspects of its citizens' lives. Reading the report raises anger -- despite its detached language and official tone -- at the plight of some 23.5 million people who live in fear and despair without control over their destiny.
