SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from April 29 to May 5.

  
April
29 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of Kim Jung-rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK), expressing deep condolences over his death.

   29 A delegation headed by Kim Yong-Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), leaves Pyongyang to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo to be held in China.

   29 Yang Hyong-sop, vice president of the SPA Presidium, meets with Pratap Singh, the new Indian ambassador to the DPRK (North Korea), at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   29 Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization, and her party leave Pyongyang.

   29 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Heinz Fischer upon his reelection as federal president of Austria.

   29 The fertilizer production process based on anthracite gasification at the Namhung Youth Chemical Complex in South Pyongan Province goes operational with due ceremony.

   29 The "Orchestra of the 21st Century" of Russia gives a performance, which was enjoyed by artists, students and people working in the fields of literature, arts and media.

   30 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of congratulations to Omar Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir upon his reelection as the president of Sudan.

   30 The 25th National Scientific and Technological Festival closes with due ceremony at the Three-Revolution Exhibition in Pyongyang.

   30 A state funeral service for Kim Jung-rin is held in Pyongyang.

   30 Massimo Barra, chairman of the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and his companion leave Pyongyang.

   30 The KCNA reports that North Korea permitted the U.S. citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, now in prison after being tried on April 6, to make phone contact with his family regarding his health and for other reasons.

1 It is announced that the 10th May 21 Architectural Festival and the 5th Symposium on Architectural Beauty will be held in Pyongyang May 4-7.

   1 Leading papers report that Kim Jong-il sends gifts to the employees of the Chollima Steel Complex.

   1 Senior Party and state officials observe the 120th anniversary of May Day. A national meeting takes place at the Rakwon Machine Complex to mark the day.

   1 The DPRK delegation headed by Kim Yong-nam returns home by special plane after participating in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo held in China.

   1 A Japan-Korea friendship delegation of Osaka, Japan, flies into Pyongyang.

   1 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il enjoyed a joint concert by the Unhasu Orchestra of the DPRK and the "Orchestra of the 21st Century" of Russia.

   2 The Phibada Opera Troupe led by Han Chol, vice minister of Culture, leaves for China to stage the opera "The Dream of the Red Chamber."

   2 A women's football match between the DPRK and Nigeria takes place at the Kimilsung Stadium in Pyongyang. The former won the game by 1 to 0, and the second round was scheduled to be held on May 5.

   3 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, president of Egypt, on his 82nd birthday.

   3 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il sent a congratulatory message to President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, chairman of the National Democratic Party of Egypt, on his birthday.

   3 Yang Hyong-sop meets with the delegation of the Pakistani preparatory committee for commemorating the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il-sung.

   3 A delegation of the families of fallen fighters of the Chinese People's Volunteers headed by Guan Youfei, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defense, flies into Pyongyang.

   4 Rodong Sinmun says the United States' "noisier trumpeting" about "fictitious missile threats" from the DPRK and Iran is nothing but a cynical plot to justify its frantic moves to establish a missile defense system (MD).

   4 A new stamp is issued in the DPRK to mark the opening of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

   4 The 5th Symposium on Architectural Beauty takes place at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang.

   4 Kim Yong-nam receives credentials from Erdogan Serif Iscan, Turkish ambassador to the DPRK, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

   4 The KCNA says the government of the Russian Federation awarded Kim Jong-il a medal for commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.

   5 The KCNA says (North) Korean archaeologists have discovered a ruined kiln dating back to the Neolithic era in Richon-ri, Sungho County, North Hwanghae Province.

   5 The second female football match between North Korea and Nigeria takes place in Pyongyang with the DPRK team defeating the Nigerian team 3-0.
