(3rd LD) S. Korea issues safety warning, launches diplomacy campaign over sunken ship

SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea issued a safety warning for its citizens staying in North Korea while preparing to launch a diplomacy campaign to make its case in the March sinking of a naval ship, officials said Tuesday, apparently indicating that its probe has found Pyongyang responsible for the disaster.

U.S. President Barack Obama expressed full support for Seoul's handling of the sinking in a telephone conversation with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, according to Lee's office, Cheong Wa Dae. The two leaders also urged the North to stop belligerent behavior toward its neighbors, a White House statement said.

South Korea plans to officially announce the outcome Thursday of an international investigation into the deadly sinking of the 1,200-ton patrol ship Cheonan on March 26. Widespread views are that North Korea is likely to be named the culprit for the disaster that killed 46 sailors.
