SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from July 8-14.

8 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il provides field guidance to the construction site of the Wonsan Army-People Power Station and a newly built facility for the production of sliced vegetables preserved in soy sauce at the Combined Foodstuff Factory of (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) Unit 534.

   8 On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the demise of late leader Kim Il-sung, leading papers in the North dedicate editorials to Kim, and top state and party officials pay homage to Kim at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang. Memorial events are also held throughout the country, including the remembrance concert "Eternal Smile" at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre.

   9 Premier Choe Yong-rim sends a message of greetings to Hubert Alexander Ingraham, prime minister of the Bahamas, on the occasion of the 37th anniversary of its independence.

   9 North Korea reorganizes the DPRK (North Korea) Joint Venture and Investment Guidance Bureau into the Committee of Investment and Joint Ventures of the DPRK.

   9 The KCNA says that Aijalon Gomes, an American man serving a prison term in the North, recently attempted to take his own life. The 30-year-old was sentenced by a North Korean court in April to eight years in a labor camp for illegally entering the socialist state across the Chinese border on Jan. 25.

   9 A reception by the (North) Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries and the Central Committee of the Korea-China Friendship Society is held at Okryu Restaurant in Pyongyang on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the conclusion of the DPRK-China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.

   9 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of greetings to Frederique de Menezes, president of Sao Tome and Principe, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the independence of his country and the proclamation of the Republic.

   9 Sin Son-ho, permanent representative of the DPRK at the U.N., holds a press conference in New York and slams the U.N. Security Council for not making "proper judgment" on the sinking of the Cheonan in late March. The 15-member council unanimously adopted a presidential statement deploring the attack on the South Korean warship. The Council, however, stopped short of blaming North Korea for the attack that killed 46 sailors.

   10 The KCNA says that Kim Yong-nam sent a message of greetings to Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, president of Mongolia, on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of the Mongolian people's victory in its revolution. Separately, DPRK Premier Choe Yong-rim sends a similar message to Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaataryn Batbold.

   10 The KCNA reports that Kim Son-gyong was appointed as ambassador to Romania, citing a decree of the SPA Presidium.

   10 Liu Hongcai, Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, hosts a reception at his embassy on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the conclusion of the DPRK-China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.

   12 A meeting and a film presentation are held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the DPRK and the Republic of the Philippines.

   12 The KCNA reports that Jong Thae-yang was appointed as ambassador to Uganda, citing a decree of the SPA Presidium.

   12 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun meets with German Ambassador to the DPRK Thomas Schafer who was making a farewell call.

   12 Rev. Han Sang-ryol of South Korea meets members of the North Headquarters of the Pan-national Alliance of Youth and Students for Korea's Reunification in Pyongyang.

   12 The KCNA criticizes Hyun In-taek, South Korea's unification minister, for making "reckless" remarks in which he held the North's leadership responsible for aggravating inter-Korean relations by making policy mistakes.

   13 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Filip Vujanovic, president of Montenegro, on the occasion of its national day.

   13 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Pierre Nkurunziza upon his reelection as Burundian president.

   14 The (North) Korean Central Broadcasting Station says that Ri Hwa-gun, new ambassador to Colombia, submitted his credentials to President Alvaro Uribe on June 6. Ri doubles as North Korea's ambassador to Brazil.
