SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1, 2010.

  
August
26 North Korean leader Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of the late Kim Song-gyu, department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK) expressing deep condolences over his death.

   26 The North's foreign ministry holds an event marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Cuba.

   26 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says that more than 7,100 houses in Sinuiju and Uiju County, North Pyongan Province, have been destroyed by recent torrential rains and floods.

   26 A meeting of delegates of South Pyongan Province of the WPK takes place in Pyongsong.

   27 Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter leaves North Korea after securing the freedom of Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been detained since January after illegally entering the North.

   27 Kim Jong-gak, first-vice director of the General Political Bureau of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA), meets with the delegation of political officials of the Vietnam People's Army headed by Lieut. General Ngo Xuan Lich, deputy head of the General Political Department.

   28 Kim Jong-il receives a message of sympathy from Dmitry Medvedev, president of the Russian Federation, over severe losses due to heavy rains and floods that hit the country's northern region.

   30 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), holds talks with the delegation of political officials of the Vietnam People's Army headed by Lieut. General Ngo Xuan Lich, deputy head of the General Political Department, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   30 Premier Choe Yong-rim sends a message of greetings to Datuk Seri Mohamad Najib Bin Tun Haji Abudul Razak, prime minister of Malaysia, on its national day.

   30 Kim Jong-il returns home from a five-day trip to China. The KCNA and Chinese media confirm Kim's "unofficial" visit to China. Reports say that the trip was made at the invitation of the Chinese president and that Kim Jong-il holds an unofficial summit with Chinese President Hu Jintao in the Chinese city of Changchun.

   31 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Roza Otunbayeva, president of Kirgyzstan, on the occasion of its national day. He also sends a message of greetings to George Maxwell Richard, president of Trinidad and Tobago, on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of its independence.

   31 A national meeting takes place at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang to commemorate the 50th anniversary of leader Kim Jong-il's start of 'immortal leadership at Kim Il-sung University, with Kim Yong-nam, Choe Thae-bok and other senior officials in attendance.

   31 Kim Yong-chun, vice marshal of the KPA and minister of the People's Armed Forces, meets with the delegation of the Shenyang Military Area of the Chinese People's Liberation Army headed by Lieut, General Zhang Youxia, commander of the area.

   31 A film show takes place at the People's Palace of Culture to mark the 65th founding anniversary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

   31 The 65th plenary session of the Central Committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of (North) Korea (GFTUK) takes place in Pyongyang and elects Hyon Sang-ju chairman of the GFTUK Central Committee.

1 Choe Yong-rim, premier of the DPRK, sends a message of greetings to Iveta Radicova, prime minister of Slovakia, on the occasion of its Constitutional Day.

   1 Choe Yong-rim sends a message of greetings to Nguyen Tan Dung, prime minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, on the occasion of its 65th birthday.

   1 North Korea names Jang Yong-chol as its new ambassador to Malaysia, according to a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.

   1 Kim Yong-nam receives a delegation of the Shenyang Military Area of the Chinese People's Liberation Army headed by Lieut. General Zhang Youxia at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.
