WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- Announcing a new defense strategy, the United States said Thursday that it will slim down its armed forces in general but they will play a bigger role in Asia in the rebalancing of firepower abroad. The Pentagon assured that it would be able to handle possible simultaneous conflicts with North Korea and Iran.
"Our military will be leaner, but the world must know the United States is going to maintain our military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats," President Barack Obama said in his first appearance at a Pentagon press briefing.
