SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from August 16-22, 2012.

16 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Japanese reactionaries have become more desperate in their moves to seize the inviolable territorial waters of Korea. At the recent 10th UN meeting for standardization of naming in New York, Japan insisted the East Sea of Korea is the Sea of Japan, citing universal recognition of that name.

   16 Premier Choe Yong-rim visits Sukchon County, South Phyongan Province, to learn about its farming.

   16 A delegation from the Olympic Committee returns home after attending the London Olympics.

   17 A delegation from the DPRK (North Korea)-Russia Friendship Association led by So Ho-won, vice chairman of the (North) Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, and a delegation from the General Bureau of Diplomatic Corps Affairs led by Deputy General Director Han Yong-bok leave Pyongyang to visit the Amur Region of the Russian Federation.

   17 The KCNA says the issue of sexual slavery for the Japanese army during World War II remains unsettled still, although 67 years have passed since the Japanese imperialists suffered defeat in the war.

   17 A national exhibition of sci-tech achievements by young Koreans opens with due ceremony at the Three-Revolution Exhibition in Pyongyang.

   17 A reception hosted by Indonesian Ambassador to North Korea Nasri Gustaman is held on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the independence of Indonesia.

   18 Jang Song-thaek, director of the Workers' Party of (North) Korea (WPK) and vice chairman of the National Defense Commission (NDC), meets with China's President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing.

   18 North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspects island defense detachments stationed in Jangjae Islet, the biggest hotspot in the southernmost part of the southwest front.

   18 The KCNA says the defense detachment of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) on Mu Islet and artillery piece No. 1 of a coast artillery company of the detachment were awarded the title of DPRK hero along with a gold star medal and Order of National Flag First Class under a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA).

   18 The KCNA reports a flood, triggered by downpours on Aug.14 and 15, swept through Kaesong City, leaving more than 240 dwelling houses destroyed or damaged and some 660 people homeless.

   18 North Korea appoints Jon Sung-hun as vice premier of the Cabinet, according to a decree of the SPA Presidium.

   18 Delegates and exhibitors from China, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Japan and Taipei of China arrive in Rason to take part in the second Rason International Trade Fair.

   18 The KCNA says celebrations of Youth Day will take place with splendor in Pyongyang on the initiative of the dear respected Marshal Kim Jong-un.

   19 The KCNA says more flooding has occurred in Pyongyang and Nampho cities, South Phyongan, North and South Hwanghae, Kangwon and South Hamgyong provinces, in the wake of heavy rains on August 14-15.

   20 The second Rason International Trade Fair opens with due ceremony in Rason.

   20 A meeting takes place at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang to mark the 50th anniversary of leader Kim Jong-il's guidance to a military camp of students of Kim Il-sung University in Oun-dong.

   20 The KCNA says the quake which jolted Kanto area, Japan, in September 1923, served as an opportunity for the Japanese government to massively kill Koreans in Japan.

   21 The KCNA says Kim Jong-un, during his recent inspection tour of island defense detachments, ordered the service members to instantly deal deadly counter-blows to the enemy if even a single shell is dropped in the waters or area of the DPRK.

   21 The Panmunjom Mission of the KPA issues a statement calling the military drills of South Korea and the U.S. intolerable actions that go against Koreans' desire and wish for national reconciliation, unity and reunification.

   21 The KCNA urges Japan to admit past crimes, saying that Japan's brazen-faced denial of its past history only adds to its crimes.

   22 The Rodong Sinmun says the songun (military-first) revolutionary feats performed by Kim Jong-il serve as a lifeline of the country and the nation, and a wealth of eternal value for Kim Il-sung's nation.

   22 The KCNA says a photo and fine art exhibition was held in Tveri Region of Russia on Aug. 17 to mark the 67th anniversary of Korea's liberation.

   22 The KCNA denounces the visit to the Yasukuni Shrine by Japanese politicians to pay respects to the war dead on Aug. 15.

   22 The KCNA releases a detailed report on the construction of the Paektusan Songun Youth Power Station.

   22 The DPRK Foreign Ministry hosts a reception to mark the 45th anniversary of ASEAN. Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun said that Southeast Asia has turned into the region of peace, stability and development from one of disputes, misfortunes and poverty thanks to the efforts of the ASEAN member nations in the past.

   22 The KCNA reports heavy rains and downpours in North Korea from late Aug. 17 to early Aug. 20 brought serious damage.
