SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from January 3-9, 2013.

  
Janaury
3 The North's National Symphony Orchestra gives a concert at the Moranbong Theater for scientists, technicians, workers and officials who contributed to the successful launch of a satellite.

   3 The (North) Korean Central news Agency (KCNA) says a spokesman for the National Defense Commission (NDC) urged in a statement on Jan. 2 for "heightened vigilance against Lee Myung-bak group's confrontation hysteria."

   4 Rodong Sinmun in an editorial calls upon all service personnel and people "to wage a dynamic drive to bring about an epochal phase in building an economic power with the same spirit and stamina as were displayed in conquering space."

   4 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of greeting to Thein Sein, president of Myanmar, on the occasion of the country's 65th anniversary of independence.

   4 An Order of Kim Jong-il is awarded to the (North) Korean Committee of Space Technology (KCST) for its success in launching satellite Kwangmyongsong 3-2 in a ceremony.

   4 Premier Choe Yong-rim makes a field survey of the Pukchang Thermal-power Complex to encourage electricity producers.

   4 A meeting of the service personnel of the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces is held at the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang to vow to thoroughly implement the tasks set forth in the New Year Address made by Kim Jong-un.

   5 Rodong Sinmun says in a commentary, "The Lee Myung Bak regime of South Korea is frantically kicking up a racket for confrontation with compatriots from the outset of the year."

   5 A mass rally takes place at Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang to carry out the tasks set forth in the historic New Year Address made by Kim Jong-un.

   5 Service personnel of the Ministry of People's Security hold a meeting to carry out the tasks Supreme Commander Kim Jong-un set forth in his New Year Address.

   5 Mass rallies take place in South and North Phyongan, Jagang, South and North Hwanghae, Kangwon, South and North Hamgyong provinces to carry out the tasks set forth by Kim Jong-un in his New Year Address.

   5 The Secretariat of the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea blasts recent remarks made by Chon Yong-u, top presidential advisor for national security of South Korea.

   6 Minju Joson, organ of the Cabinet, says the North-South relations stand at the crossroads of dialogue and confrontation, peace and war, and the improvement of inter-Korean relations hinges on decisions made by South Korean authorities.

   7 A delegation of Google Corp. of the United States, including Bill Richardson, former governor of New Mexico State, and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, arrives in Pyongyang by air.

   7 Mass rallies take place in Ryanggang Province, Nampho City and Rason City to carry out the tasks set forth in the historic New Year Address made by Kim Jong-un.

   7 A Chinese government delegation headed by Li Jinzao, vice minister of Commerce of China, arrives in Pyongyang to attend the seventh meeting of the inter-governmental committee for cooperation in economy, trade and science and technology between the DPRK (North Korea) and China.

   7 A poster exhibition "Let us bring about a radical turn in the building of an economic giant with the same spirit and mettle as were displayed in conquering space!" opened at the Pyongyang International Cultural Centre.

   8 The KCNA says the National Folk Art Troupe of the DPRK visiting China gave splendid performances at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and the Opera Theatre of the Tianjin Grand Theatre on January 5 and 6.

   8 The KCNA says a spokesman of the NDC recently released an undated statement condemning the Lee Myung Bak regime of South Korea for having conducted a confrontation racket from the outset of the New Year.

   8 North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Le Luong Minh of Vietnam upon his appointment as secretary-general of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

   8 Workers, members of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea (GFTUK), agricultural workers and members of the Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea (UAWK) vow to thoroughly implement the tasks set forth by Kim Jong-un in his New Year Address.

   9 A meeting for the memebers of the youth shock brigade for northern railroads is held in Manpho City, Jagang Province, to implement the tasks set forth by Kim Jong-un in his New Year Address.

   9 The KCNA says a delegation of U.S.-based Google Corp. headed by Bill Richardson, former governor of New Mexico State, visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang to pay tribute to Generalissimos Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il.

   9 An agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the governments of the DPRK and China is signed in Pyongyang.

   9 Cuban Ambassador to the DPRK German Hermin Ferras Alvarez hosts a reception to celebrate the 54th anniversary of the victorious Cuban revolution.
