Aung San Suu Kyi to receive honorary degree from S. Korean univ.
SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will receive an honorary doctoral degree from Seoul National University in recognition of her contribution to promoting human rights and education, school officials said Thursday.

As a pro-democracy icon and the chairman of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar, she "contributed greatly to promoting the universal value of human rights and to developing higher education in her country," said a school official, explaining the reason for the conferment.

The award ceremony will be held at the school campus in Seoul on Feb. 1, he added. Aung San Suu Kyi plans to visit here later this month for a five-day schedule to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2013 PyeongChang Special Olympics World Winter Games which will be held between Jan. 29 to Feb. 5 in the alpine city, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul.

After spending two decades under house arrest for democracy and freedom in Myanmar, Suu Kyi was freed in 2010 and elected to the Myanmar parliament last year, a historic moment for the country that has been emerging from international isolation with sweeping democratic reforms.
