SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea from May 16-22, 2013.

16 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), met and had a talk with Isao Iijima, special counselor in charge of crisis management for the Japanese Cabinet, and his companion at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

   16 Isao Iijima, special counselor in charge of crisis management for the Japanese Cabinet, and his companion visit the Pyongyang Folklore Park.

   16 An international workshop on organic agriculture takes at the Pyongyang Centre for Cultural Exchange with Foreign Countries from May 14-16.

   16 The 39th National School children's Sports Contest for Jongil Peace Prize opens with some 9,000 school students and children from each province participating. The event will be held in Pyongyang, Phyongsong and Hamhung cities.

   16 North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visits the February 20 Factory of the (North) Korean People's Army (KPA), a comprehensive foodstuff processing base capable of producing varieties of foodstuff including soy, bean paste, seasoning, and butter.

   17 Premier Pak Pong-ju makes a field survey of the Chollima Steel Complex and the Posan Iron Works in South Phyongan Province.

   17 Isao Iijima, special counselor in charge of crisis management for the Japanese Cabinet, flies back home after a four-day visit to North Korea.

   17 Round-table talks with inhabitants of North Korea were held at the Koryo Compatriots House upon their return home from South Korea. The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says they had been taken to South Korea due to South Korean puppet agents' sinister plots and allurement and appeasement.

   18 The delegation of the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports headed by Vice Minister Son Kwang-ho leaves Pyongyang to take part in the assembly of the International Weightlifting Federation to be held in Russia and the fifth international conference of ministers of Physical Culture and Sports slated to take place in Germany.

   18 A departure ceremony of tour boat Royale Star for the first batch of Rason-Mt. Kumgang international tour makers takes place at Rajin Port.

   18 Kim Jong-un provides field guidance to the Ryongmun Liquor Factory.

   19 The KCNA says DPRK table-tennis players Kim Hyok-bong and Kim Jong won gold medals at the 52nd ITTF World Championships (individual events) in Paris.

   19 The 50th National Games of Juvenile Sports Schools opens with due ceremony in Hamhung, South Hamgyong Province. The games will be held in Pyongyang, Hamhung, Phyongsong, Sariwon, Nampho and other places.

   19 Rodong Sinmun claims the United States has sought, first of all, to violate the sovereignty of the (North) Korean people and their rights to existence and development through a series of joint military maneuvers.

   19 Kim Jong-un together with his wife Ri Sol-ju visits Pyongyang Mt. Myohyang Children's Camp situated at the foot of Mt. Myohyang in North Phyongan Province.

   20 Premier Pak Pong-ju visits the Hwanghae Iron and Steel Complex to review its operation.

   20 Rodong Sinmun says Japan should turn over a new leaf and follow the present international trend by which various other countries are making sincere efforts to break with the past and win trust of the international community.

   20 The KCNA says the DPRK has been making big efforts to prevent the spread of bird flu virus.

   20 Kim Jong-un inspects the KPA Unit 405 and has a photo session with service personnel of the unit.

   20 Kim Jong-un gives field guidance to the Breeding Station No. 621 of the KPA under construction.

   21 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greeting to Abd Rabbuh Mansur Al Hadi, president of the Republic of Yemen, on the occasion of its national day.

   21 The KCNA says the first batch of Rason-Mt. Kumgang international tourist group arrives at the Kosong port by the ship "Royale Star" on May 20.

   22 Choe Ryong-hae, vice marshal and director of KPA General Political Bureau, is dispatched to China as a special envoy by Kim Jong-un. Choe meets with Wang Jiarui, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

   22 Foreign ministry spokesman claims the United States is malignantly slandering the DPRK by calling it a "state of special concern" in an annual report on international religious freedom released by the State Department.

   22 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a congratulatory message to Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
