SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's top diplomat is on his way to New York to attend an annual meeting of the United Nations, the country's media said Monday.

The North's delegation, led by Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong, left Pyongyang earlier in the day to participate in the 70th session of the U.N. General Assembly under way in the U.S. city, reported the Korean Central News Agency.

In the one-paragraph dispatch, it did not provide other information.

Ri is expected to join the Sustainable Development Summit slated to be held from Sept. 25 to 27, followed by a speech at the plenary session on Oct. 1, according to diplomatic sources.

He took part in the U.N. meeting last year as well.

Meanwhile, South Korean President Park Geun-hye plans to attend the U.N. event, accompanied by Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and other officials.

There is no plan for a separate meeting between Yun and Ri, however, a South Korean official said.
