SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's ceremonial leader Kim Yong-nam will soon visit Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony for Iran's president slated for early next month, the North's state media said Friday.

Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, will attend Hassan Rouhani's swearing-in ceremony at the invitation of the Iranian government, the Korean Central News Agency said, without elaborating.

Iranian President Rouhani was re-elected in late May, defeating his conservative rival and extending his term to another four years.

North Korea and Iran were slapped by sanctions over their respective nuclear development. There has been speculation that Tehran has kept close cooperation with Pyongyang over its missile and nuclear programs.

The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a sanctions bill aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile development, as part of a package legislation that also targets Russia and Iran.

The North and Iran appear to have strengthened diplomatic cooperation.

Ryu Myong-sun, vice department director at the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, visited Iran in mid-July to meet with officials from Iran's opposition party.

Choe Thae-bok, a vice chairman of the ruling party's central committee, met with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in February during his visit to Tehran.
