MOSCOW, July 12 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's Vice Premier Ri Ryong-nam on Thursday left Pyongyang for Moscow to attend the closing ceremony of the 2018 World Cup finals slated for July 15, according to the North's embassy in the Russian capital.

The embassy said on its Facebook account that Ri, who doubles as the president of the North's football association, took off for Russia after being invited by FIFA to participate in the World Cup closing ceremony at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

Watchers speculate that Ri may meet with Russia's government officials during his stay in Moscow to discuss bilateral cooperation and security issues of the Korean Peninsula.

Pyongyang sent its titular head Kim Yong-nam to the World Cup opening ceremony on June 14. At that time, Kim delivered North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin has asked the North's leader to visit Russia on the occasion of the Eastern Economic Forum slated for September in Vladivostok.
