SEOUL -- South Korea should play a more "active" and "leading" role as a stake holder in handling North Korea's nuclear problem, President Moon Jae-in's pick for foreign minister said Wednesday.

Kang Kyung-wha told a confirmation hearing that she will "sternly" deal with any provocation by the North while getting actively involved in international efforts to rein in Pyongyang's evolving nuclear and missile capabilities.

PARIS/INCHEON -- The daughter of a late businessman blamed for the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster has been arrested, as France extradited her three years after she fled to avoid arrest on embezzlement charges, officials said Wednesday.

The Incheon District Prosecutors' Office said they apprehended Yoo Sum-na, the daughter of Yoo Byung-eun, aboard a Korean Airlines plane bound for Incheon at Charles de Gaulle Airport at around 3:30 a.m.

She arrived in Incheon at around 3:00 p.m. wearing white pants and a khaki jacket with her handcuffed hands covered with a black cloth. She refused to answer reporters' questions.

(2nd LD) Cheong Wa Dae says deployment of THAAD should be suspended for now

SEOUL -- South Korea's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Wednesday the ongoing deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system here should be suspended at least for now, pending a full-blown environmental impact assessment.

"We are not saying the two launchers and other equipment that have already been deployed should be withdrawn. But those that have yet to be deployed will have to wait," a senior Cheong Wa Dae official told reporters.

The remarks followed Cheong Wa Dae's probe over an allegation that the defense ministry may have tried to keep the deployment under a blanket.

Kia unveils render of its upcoming SUV before July launch

SEOUL -- Kia Motors Corp. on Wednesday unveiled rendered images of its new subcompact sport-utility vehicle "Stonic" before its launch next month.

Kia Motors, the country's second-largest carmaker by sales after Hyundai Motor Co., plans to launch the compact SUV in the domestic market in July to absorb a growing demand for small-sized recreational vehicles, the company said in a statement.

The maker of the K5, K7 and K9 sedans aims to beef up its SUV lineup currently composed of the Mohave, Sorento, Sportage and Niro SUVs with the addition of the Stonic, it said.

Three new avian flu suspected cases reported

SEJONG -- New suspected avian influenza infection cases have been reported at poultry farms in southwest South Korea, authorities said Wednesday, raising concerns that the highly pathogenic disease is spreading nationwide.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said it received new reports of suspected avian influenza from chicken and duck farms in North Jeolla Province.

More detailed test results will be available later.

Net purchase of KOSDAQ shares by offshore investors biggest in 13 yrs: data

SEOUL -- Foreign investors purchased a net 530 billion won (US$474 million) worth of stocks on South Korea's tech-heavy KOSDAQ market in May, the most in 13 years, local data showed Wednesday.

The amount is the third-largest monthly net buying by offshore investors in the secondary KOSDAQ market after 1.01 trillion won tallied in February 2000 and 723.4 billion won in April 2004, the Korea Exchange said. Foreign investors concentrated on buying IT and semiconductor shares.

Foreign investors bought 1.06 trillion won worth of stocks on the KOSDAQ market more than they sold, during the first five months this year.
