(LEAD) Prosecutors demand 12 yrs in prison for Samsung's Lee over bribery, other charges

SEOUL -- The prosecution on Monday demanded 12 years in prison for Samsung Group heir Lee Jae-yong for bribery and other charges in a massive corruption scandal involving ousted former President Park Geun-hye.

The independent counsel has indicted Lee, the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Co., in February on charges of providing or promising some 43.3 billion won (US$38 million) to Park's friend Choi Soon-sil.

N.K. condemns new U.N. sanctions, vows retaliation against U.S.

SEOUL -- North Korea on Monday condemned the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)'s fresh sanctions, vowing to retaliate against the U.S. if Washington keeps its hostile policy toward it.

North Korea warned in a statement that it is ready to use any ultimate means if the U.S. does not give up its moves to stifle Pyongyang.

(2nd LD) Moon says S. Korea, U.S. stand ready to counter any N. Korean provocation

SEOUL -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in urged North Korea on Monday to halt provocations and come to the dialogue table, noting the allied forces of South Korea and the United States stand ready to counter any provocation.

"Yesterday, a new U.N. Security Council resolution was adopted with an unprecedented speed and an unanimous vote with the support of all major countries, including China and Russia," the president said while meeting with his top presidential aides at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae.

(2nd LD) Dodgers' Ryu Hyun-jin collects 4th win of season vs. Mets

SEOUL -- Ryu Hyun-jin of the Los Angeles Dodgers has collected his fourth win of 2017 after throwing a scoreless start against the New York Mets.

Ryu improved to 4-6 after holding the Mets off the board across seven innings in the Dodgers' 8-0 victory at Citi Field in New York on Sunday (local time). He was relieved by Tony Cingrani in the bottom eighth when the Dodgers were leading 7-0.

Report says companies told to cut back power consumption in July to cope with low reserves

SEOUL -- The government invoked an emergency power cutback for some companies last month, a report claimed Monday, a measure opponents of a nuclear-free policy say proves the country could run dangerously low on electricity if reactor operations are halted.

The report submitted by the Korea Power Exchange to Rep. Kim Moo-sung of the minor opposition Bareun Party said the companies were instructed to reduce their power usage for three hours on July 12 and for four hours on July 21.

Top diplomats of N. Korea, Russia hold meeting in Manila

MANILA -- The top diplomats of North Korea and Russia held a meeting Monday on the sidelines of a regional security forum in Manila, the Philippines, a North Korean diplomat said.

The North's Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov met earlier in the day at a convention center, the venue for the ASEAN Regional Forum, North Korean diplomat Pang Kwang-hyok, who serves for the North Korean delegation to the forum, told reporters.

(3rd LD) N. Korea's foreign minister claims S. Korea's offer for talks lacks sincerity

MANILA -- North Korea's foreign minister dismissed South Korea's recent offer for talks as "lacking sincerity" during his brief encounter with Seoul's top diplomat on the sidelines of an Asian security forum in Manila on Sunday, according to a Seoul government source.

North Korea's Ri Yong-ho and South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha met for three minutes at an official dinner for top diplomats joining a series of meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
