Two Koreas hold working-level military talks

SEOUL -- The two Koreas held working-level military talks Thursday to discuss details of a comprehensive agreement to flesh out the military part of their April summit accord aimed at reducing border tensions and building mutual trust.

The meeting began at 10 a.m. at Tongilgak, a North Korea-controlled building in the truce village of Panmunjom within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

BTS becomes first Korean artist nominated for American Music Awards

SEOUL -- K-pop phenomenon BTS has been nominated for the annual American Music Awards (AMAs), slated for Oct. 9, becoming the first Korean act to receive such recognition, according to its organizer Thursday.

"On Sept. 12 local time, the 2018 American Music Awards announced its nominees, and BTS has been included in the Favorite Social Artist category," the AMAs announced online.

Moon urges judges to address past wrongdoings, push for self reform

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in on Thursday called for courts' efforts to correct their past wrongdoings and make the judiciary branch independent, calling it the only way to win the much-needed faith of the people.

"The people are now working to build a just Republic of Korea. And all government officials, including myself, are now standing on the rule of law that the people restored," the president said in a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the court system, which came shortly after the country's liberation from the 1910-45 Japanese colonial rule on Aug. 15.

Koreas to discuss denuclearization, peace regime in next week's summit: vice minister

SEOUL -- Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung said Thursday that the two Koreas' leaders will discuss how to accomplish complete denuclearization and build a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula when they meet in Pyongyang next week.

In a speech to a security forum held in Seoul, Chun also said that Seoul will actively implement its summit agreements with the North, believing that progress in inter-Korean relations will facilitate the denuclearization process.

56 pct of S. Koreans favor stronger real estate taxes: poll

SEOUL -- More than five out of 10 South Koreans are supportive of the government's plan to hike real estate tax rates to curb rising housing prices, a poll showed Thursday.

In the survey on 500 adults conducted by Realmeter, 56.4 percent of the respondents said that they are in favor of the government's plan to strengthen the so-called comprehensive real estate tax scheme. It showed that 30.7 percent oppose the move.

SEOUL -- Making a pitch for its New Southern Policy, South Korea is striving to harmonize it with similar geopolitical initiatives, especially the United States' Indo-Pacific strategy.

Last November, the Moon Jae-in administration declared its core diplomatic policy of improving strategic ties with countries located southwest of the peninsula, mainly the members of ASEAN and India.
