New HIV cases in S. Korea inch down in 2007
SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- Newly reported HIV infections in South Korea in 2007 fell marginally from a year earlier, health officials said Tuesday.
A total of 744 people were reportedly to have been infected with HIV in 2007, compared with 750 cases the previous year, the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention said. Of the total, 701, or 94.2 percent, were men.
As of December 2007, 5,323 South Koreans had contracted the virus, and 980 of them died. HIV was first reported in South Korea in 1985.
The center called for the use of condoms, saying that nearly all infections were sexually transmitted.
In a bid to curb the spread of HIV, which causes AIDS, the agency said it will raise public awareness of the disease and promote the use of condoms through education.
