China is main source of cyberattacks on gov't: study

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- More than half of the hacker attacks on computer systems of South Korea's government and public agencies come from China, with the personal information stolen in the attacks mostly exploited for financial fraud, a study found Tuesday.

China accounted for 54 percent of the cyberattacks in Korea, dwarfing those from the United States (14 percent), Japan (5 percent), Brazil (5 percent) and Taiwan (3 percent), according to the Korea Institute of Information Society & Cryptology.

The non-governmental research center's study surveyed 2,121 hacking cases and failed attempts through March. The unauthorized access to Koreans' confidential data mostly resulted in telephone fraud, also called voice phishing, a scam directing individuals to make calls and provide credit card or bank account numbers for financial rewards, said Lee Hong-seop, head of the institute.

South Korea has 5,700 phone fraud cases resulting in 57 billion won (US$ 54.6 million) in losses every year, Lee said.

The Chinese hacking caused great concern when Chinese hackers attacked Internet Auction, the Korean affiliate of the world's largest online auction market eBay, and caused a huge leak of personal information, including card numbers and passwords of the Korean unit's members in February.

The study also said North Korea operates its own hacking and defense system through its government research center, the Korea Computer Center.
