Sales of Samsung's 'Haptic' smartphone top 3 million
SEOUL, Sept. 8 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest handset maker, said Tuesday that sales of its "Haptic" smartphone in South Korea have surpassed the three million mark.
Sales of Haptic mobile phones have totaled some three million units since first going on sale in South Korea in March 2008, the company said in a statement. Samsung has so far released nine models in its Haptic series. The popular line is the second-highest selling Samsung phone in the country, following the Benz phone, which passed the 30 million mark domestically after it was released in 2004, Samsung said. The company, however, did not disclose the exact number of Benz phones sold.
The South Korean smartphone market is expected to heat up as mobile carriers here have been aggressively extending their lineups.
While the local market for mobile phones has been dominated by Samsung and its rival LG Electronics Inc., Research In Motion Ltd. and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Inc. also began selling their own versions of the smartphone in South Korea this year.
Apple Inc. is also reported to be mulling over releasing its worldwide hit iPhone in South Korea.
