S. Korean mobile phone recharger interface accepted for int'l standard review

SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's mobile phone battery recharger interface has been accepted for review by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that aims to set a global standard by 2010, a government commission said Sunday.

The Korea Communication Commission (KCC) said members of the ITU subgroup who met in Switzerland last week accepted the 20-pin battery recharger used by South Korean companies like Samsung and LG.

The country is the second-largest producer of mobile phones in the world and has made steady gains in recent years based on innovative designs, cutting-edge technologies and aggressive marketing.

The KCC said that acceptance of the 20-pin interface is a mark of the country's excellence in this field. If accepted as the world standard, future products will have to use the power adapter system for their phones, enhancing international interoperability and cutting costs associated with different rechargers.

At present, a mobile phone company producer must make different rechargeable interfaces for different markets, translating into greater overall costs.

In addition to the 20-pin system, the ITU said it will review proposals forwarded by the GSM Association and China as candidates for a universal battery rechargeable pack.
