SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's No. 2 smartphone maker, said Thursday that the total sales of its Galaxy S2 smartphone have surpassed the 20 million mark in domestic and overseas markets 10 months after its debut.
Samsung Electronics said that the sales of the Galaxy S2 reached the milestone at a faster pace than the Galaxy S model, its predecessor. The combined sales of the two smartphones have exceeded 40 million units, according to the company.
The sales figures represent only the number of mobile phones shipped to wireless carriers, not the number of smartphones sold to customers overall.
Strong sales of smartphones pushed up Samsung Electronics' fourth-quarter earnings. The company reported a 17 percent rise in net income to reach 4 trillion won (US$3.5 billion) for the final quarter of last year. Its fourth-quarter operating profit reached a record high of 5.3 trillion won.
