Mobile number portability drops on penalty

SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- Mobile number portability (MNP) in South Korea declined sharply over the past weekend as local mobile carriers were fined for their excessive subsidies, industry sources said Wednesday.

The country's three mobile carriers -- SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. -- received a total of 58,133 MNP applications during the July 20-22 period, compared with 90,188 from a week earlier, according to the sources.

MNP enables mobile telephone users to retain their phone numbers when switching mobile network operators.
